Those dedicated to stopping the bump stock ban aren’t going to roll over and go away. They consider this an abridgment of their civil liberties, after all. I don’t disagree.

Because of that, they’re ready to fight. Right now, supporters of bump stocks are hoping to enlist the help of the pro-gun Supreme Court. In particular, they want the Court to issue a stay that will prevent enforcement of the ban.

Gun rights advocates on Wednesday gave notice that they will seek a stay from the Supreme Court after US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld lower court ruling on Monday that denied their request to lift the Trump administration’s bump stocks ban.

However, it’s best that no one gets their hopes up on this one. After all, these are the same folks who declined to issue a stay on the issue just a week earlier.

Last week, the Supreme Court denied an application for stay in a separate Michigan District Court case, Gun Owners of America v. Barr, challenging the bump stocks ban.

Frankly, I think I understand this quixotic quest to save bump stocks, even though all indications are the ban will hold up in court at this point. It’s not that all that many people think they’re going to win.

Don’t get me wrong; some people are convinced that their interpretation of the Constitution is not only accurate but the one shared by the key judges. They think they’ll win any challenge and likely be heartbroken if they don’t. They’re True Believers.

But I think a lot of people get it. They know the odds are stacked against them, and while they want to win, they’re also realistic enough to know they probably won’t.

So why do it?

Easy. You fight because you have to fight. You fight because if you don’t, the other side thinks you won’t and will keep pushing and pushing. You fight because you know that it’s a moral obligation to combat these kinds of things with every ounce of your being.

If nothing else, it’s a reminder to lawmakers that gun owners aren’t people who will only complain a little bit on social media. We’re activists. We’re people who will battle and, perhaps more importantly, vote. There’s a reason why our voices are so loud, after all.

I expect the Supreme Court will decline this petition for a stay, just as they did the previous one. There are no indicators that they won’t.

But miracles do happen, and even if they don’t, that’s not the point. The point is to make it known that gun rights activists won’t take any regulations lying down, that pro-gun people aren’t doormats who will mindlessly capitulate with government demands. We’re going to fight. More importantly, we’re going to remind lawmakers that we’ll fight tooth and nail for what we believe…and for who we believe in.
