Rep. Eric “Nuke ’em All” Swalwell (D- CA) is running for president, so any number of nonsense things are likely to fly out of his mouth between the time of his announcement and whenever it is he ends up bowing out of the race. His odds of winning the Democratic Party’s nomination are slim at best. He’s not going to go the distance and face-off with President Trump.

But between now and then, we’re going to hear a lot of insane things from not just Swalwell, but all of the candidates.

However, Swalwell’s recent claim may be tough to beat [emphasis mine]:

Democratic presidential candidate Eric Swalwell said Sunday that the Second Amendment shouldn’t be repealed but that it does allow for some guns to be controlled.

“The greatest threat to the Second Amendment is doing nothing,” the California congressman said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “And the Second Amendment is not an absolute right. Just like free speech — you can’t shout fire in a theater or lie about the products you are selling. You can’t own a bazooka, you can’t own a tank, you can’t own rocket-propelled grenades.“

Um, the Second Amendment explicitly says, “shall not be infringed.” Doing “nothing” is exactly what kind of threat to the Second Amendment? At worst, it’s protected from further infringement by anti-gun zealots.

Then again, Swallwell also thinks you can’t own tanks.

But, things are looking up for gun owners. It seems that Swalwell’s assault weapon ban won’t make us all give up our guns. Oh no, he’s decided to grant us a way to hold onto them.

Swalwell last year proposed a ban on “possession of military-style semiautomatic assault weapons.” The government would offer to buy those guns to get them out of circulation.

Under Swalwell’s plan, people who don’t agree to sell back their military-style weapons could face jail time. But, he said: “I also offer an alternative, which would be to keep them at a hunting club or a shooting range. And the reason I have proposed this is because these weapons are so devastating.“

Swalwell said his plan would allow gun owners to continue to have pistols, rifles and shotguns. His proposal would also add background checks and fund violence prevention programs in cities, he said.

Well, don’t we feel all squishy inside? I mean, we can keep them at a hunting club or shooting range. You know, where they won’t do us a damn bit of good if we need them.

The fact that they’re all somewhat centrally located when the government decides we don’t even warrant that may also play a factor.

It’s clear that Swalwell doesn’t understand a damn thing about the Second Amendment. There is a great threat to the Second Amendment, but it’s people like Swalwell who argue that to save the right to keep and bear arms, we have to erase it.

“It became necessary to destroy the town to save it.”

It’s a good thing he’s as likely to become president as I am to walk on the moon. In fact, I think I’m more likely to get to do that than Swalwell is to sit in the Oval Office as anything other than a guest.
