Originally, Walmart said it wasn’t going to change its policy on firearms after El Paso. The anti-gunners went on the offensive, though, and continued to push for the retail giant to change its policies regarding firearms.

Well, after weeks of pushing, as well as a few other things, the anti-gunners are going to get their way.

Walmart is halting sales of all handgun ammunition as well as .223 and 5.56 ammo.

Walmart says it will discontinue the sale of handgun ammunition and also publicly request that customers refrain from openly carrying firearms in stores even where state laws allow it.

The announcement comes just days after a mass shooting claimed seven lives in Odessa, Texas and follows two other back-to-back shootings last month, one of them at a Walmart store.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based discounter said Tuesday it will stop selling short-barrel and handgun ammunition after it runs out of its current inventory. It will also discontinue handgun sales in Alaska, marking its complete exit from handguns and allowing it to focus on hunting rifles and related ammunition only.

“We have a long heritage as a company of serving responsible hunters and sportsmen and women, and we’re going to continue doing so,” according to a memo by Walmart’s CEO Doug McMillon that will be circulated to employees Tuesday afternoon.

The company didn’t end there, however.

Remember a few weeks ago when a dipstick decided to walk into Walmart with body armor and an AR-15 to make some idiotic statement regarding his Second Amendment rights?

Well, buddy, thanks for screwing it up for the rest of the class.

Walmart is further requesting that customers refrain from openly carrying firearms at its stores unless they are law enforcement officers. Last month, a gunman entered a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas and killed 22 people using an AK-style firearm that Walmart already bans the sale of. Texas became an open carry state in 2016, allowing people to openly carry firearms in public.

Now, to be fair to the dipstick, Walmart didn’t explicitly name him as its reason for asking people not to carry openly in its stores. However, let’s also be realistic; it likely wouldn’t have come up without his idiocy.

The report notes that Walmart’s share of the ammunition market will drop from 20 percent to about six to nine percent annually. That’s a huge drop, and it also represents increased prices for shooters as few retail companies will be able to match Walmart’s prices.

However, what the new policy won’t do is make Walmart stores any safer.

The El Paso shooter didn’t pick a Walmart store because it sold guns. He picked it because there would be a lot of people in the store at any given moment. The fact that it sold firearms was likely to be completely incidental to his plans. After all, most mass shootings don’t happen in places like Walmart, places where people often carry guns. They tend to occur in gun-free zones like schools and churches. All the new policy move by Walmart does is make it more likely that a shooting will take place in one of its stores, not less.

Regardless, this is the world we have, and these are the rules we get stuck playing by. The anti-gunners are continuing to bully anyone who refuses to accept the anti-gun line, and we’re the ones left paying the price.
