Gohmert was right. Democrats are out of line

Emotions run hot after a mass shooting. People get worked up when innocents are slaughtered by some maniac, especially when you’re talking about small children.

But that doesn’t excuse a lot of the rhetoric we’ve heard from the Democratic Party of late. Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert put Democrats in their place on Friday over some of those comments.

Rep. Louie Gohmert gave an emotionally-charged response to Democrats’ accusations that Republicans don’t care about the victims of gun violence.

The Texas Republican said his Democratic colleagues were being arrogant after Rep. Eric Swalwell asked GOP lawmakers why, if they won’t pass gun reforms, they don’t attend the funerals of mass shooting victims.

“How dare you? You think we don’t have hearts,” Mr. Gohmert said. “We care about people. We care about their lives and lives that have been so trivialized. We care deeply. How dare you? How dare you? You arrogant people attributing murder to those of us who want to do something to stop it.”

Gohmert said just about everything I think and feel on this matter.

As I’ve noted more than once, I’ve lost someone I cared about to a mass shooting. I know the shock and pain people experience when they suffer such a loss. I can only imagine what it’s like to lose a child in such a way, but I’ve got a better point to begin such imaginings than most do.

This idea that if you refuse to support gun control, you just don’t care about human life is downright offensive.

Let me make it clear: We don’t support gun control because we have reason to believe it will not work and we’d do better to look at other options.

To be fair, the fact that Democrats are so myopic on the issue could and should be noted as a lack of caring on their part.

Gohmert also pointed out something interesting besides how vile Democrats are being.

Mr. Gohmert also noted that major cities with the highest murder rates are run by Democrats and asked why measures passed at the local level would get better results at the federal level.

He’s not wrong, either.

Of course, some will argue that those policies fail because guns are imported from out of state, but I’ve always been skeptical of that explanation. After all, if guns were the problem, why aren’t those other states having the same issue?

Plus, as I noted on Thursday, if guns themselves are the issue, why is the non-gun homicide rate so high compared with other high-income nations’ total homicide rate?

In other words, there are valid reasons to be skeptical of gun control working as advertised.

But that doesn’t matter to anti-gun Democrats who are pushing this and refuse to even consider anyone who disagrees might actually be doing it from a position of actually giving a damn about people. No, they have it in their minds that no one else could possibly be right as to how to address these.

So, they say some pretty hateful things about literally anyone who disagrees, trying to claim they want to see dead children.

Gohmert said what he did to address that, and he was right to do so. I’m sick of having to defend myself as a person simply because I oppose gun control.

I don’t think it will work. I don’t think it does anything but impede law-abiding citizens. I damn sure don’t think it’ll stop a mass shooting.

Gohmert called these Democrats out on this nonsense. They need to be called out on this regularly.

Unfortunately, there won’t be pushback from the media – something that might actually help put an end to this – so we’re going to have to keep enduring this vile rhetoric.
