A lot of people don’t like the Bruen decision. They argue that more guns on the streets lead to more crime; that armed citizens simply cannot be trusted to do the right thing.

Those of us on this side of the debate see it differently. We argue that armed citizens can not just protect themselves, but save the lives of others, either intentionally or indirectly.

A man in Kansas illustrated that fact quite well last week.

Trevor Wende, 19, of Wichita was treated at a hospital before being arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and criminal damage to property, [Wichita police spokesperson Chad] Ditch said. The road rage incident started on 21st near Hillside while both drivers were headed west, Ditch said. He wasn’t sure what exactly sparked the road rage. At the light at 21st and I-135, Wende reversed into the other vehicle, Ditch said.

Both drivers then got into a fight before Wende brandished a knife, he said. A passerby saw Wende with a knife, stopped, pulled out his gun and held Wende at gunpoint until police arrived. Wende was checked at the hospital for injuries he got during the fight, Ditch said.

In other words, the alleged bad guy lost his cool, back into the other guy’s car, then both got out and got into a fight.

Now, this isn’t a great thing, but thus far it’s nothing too massive.

Unfortunately, Wende allegedly pulled a knife, which escalated things.

At this point, it sure looks like a situation where a reasonable person would believe that someone could be seriously injured or killed. Enter our armed citizen.

He pulled the gun and held the suspect at gunpoint until the police arrived, at which point they took over.

Here’s the thing about this one, though. No shots were fired. No one was injured. There is absolutely nothing in this that would show up on a police report.

As a result of that, nothing about this will be tracked officially as a defensive gun use by the FBI, CDC, or any other three-letter agency.

Yet it’s not difficult to picture what might have happened had this person not been there and been armed. The other driver could have been badly hurt or killed, all because of a disagreement that started between two drivers who apparently didn’t even know one another.

It’s insane that a couple of guns going from point A to point B should end up with someone needing a firearm, but it happens. In this case, as in so many others, the gun was used to protect human life.

Even without the Second Amendment, our right to keep and bear arms would matter because of incidents like this. Guns save lives, and at least one person was very fortunate an armed citizen was present to stop the situation from escalating even further.

I’d argue Wende was fortunate as well, since taking a human life can also take a piece of our soul with it, especially if it’s over something like road rage.
