Whitmer to take aim at gun rights

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has made her opinions on the Second Amendment pretty clear. She might occasionally pay a little lip service to the text, but she’s more than willing to do everything she can to restrict how people can enjoy their God-given gun rights.

She’s been unable to do so, though, which has been a blessing for Michigan residents.

Unfortunately, she’s not about to stop.

For the past few years, Democrats in Michigan have pushed for gun reform in the state. Multiple bills have stalled, but now for the first time in decades, that could all change.

For the first time since 1984, Democrats have control of the House, Senate and the governor’s seat.

Some of the bills that have been sponsored include Red Flag laws and banning assault weapons. This is something Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she plans on focusing on in her second term.

Of course, Whitmer’s actual statement is pretty vague, but I don’t see how the assault weapon ban and red flag bill won’t make a reappearance.

While the GOP in Michigan was able to block those laws pretty effectively, their ability to do now has been significantly reduced. I’m not familiar with the legislature’s rules, so I don’t even know if a filibuster is a possibility.

And that’s bad news for gun owners there, because Whitmer is not your friend.

She simply doesn’t trust you to maintain your right to keep and bear arms. That’s what many of the policies she’s backed have been about. You cannot be trusted with guns, at least in her mind.

So, the days of relative freedom with regard to firearms are numbered.

That is, unless activists there step up and make it politically untenable for even Democrats in the state to back gun control.

Michigan residents need to remember that gun control may be part of the Democrats’ platform, but backing it isn’t a requirement in order to put a “D” after one’s name. Individual lawmakers will evaluate what’s best for their careers based on what the people say.

If gun owners and gun rights supporters step up, even Democrats will oppose the measure.

Sure, they might be sneaky and simply let it die in committee, but do you really care? So long as Whitmer’s anti-gun push is thwarted, does it matter how that happens?

I wouldn’t think so.

The truth, though, is that Whitmer represents a threat to the right to keep and bear arms. Hell, based on her response to COVID-19, she’s a threat to pretty much every right. Regardless, it’s imperative that people step up and oppose her.

There’s a system in place. Use it and defeat her attempts to advance gun control that no one really wants in the state. Do not let her run roughshod over the state or over lawmakers. Not without, at least, making a stand.

Then make it a point to let your voices be heard at the ballot box going forward. Make Whitmer and her allies pay for their assault on your right to keep and bear arms.
