Biden to visit Monterey Park to renew gun control calls

President Joe Biden will, from time to time, pay lip service to the Second Amendment. He’s even claimed to support it.

Then again, he’s also declared that he thinks it’s a collective right, not an individual one, so I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised.

Following every mass shooting, Biden has renewed calls for gun control. Usually, he’s calling for an assault weapon ban before we even know what kind of gun the killer used–which has often turned out to be a handgun.

Now, he’s heading to Monterey Park–the site of a deadly mass shooting–to once again call for gun control.

President Joe Biden intends to head to California next week to continue calling for strict gun control measures, according to The New York Times.

Biden will visit Monterey Park, California, where a gunman killed 11 people at a Chinese Lunar New Year dance festival in January, taking the opportunity to call for additional gun control legislation, a White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly told the NYT. Biden previously used Monterey Park hero Brandon Tsay to call for a nationwide ban on “assault weapons” during his State of the Union Address in February, saying, “He saved lives. It’s time we do the same as well.”

“He thought he was going to die, but then he thought about the people inside. In that instant, he found the courage to act and wrestled the semi-automatic pistol away from a gunman who had already killed 11 people at another dance studio,” Biden said at the time. “Ban assault weapons now.”

The problem for Biden is that calling for more gun control is about all he can actually do right now.

Sure, Democrats have a slim majority in the Senate, but not enough of one to prevent a filibuster. They have no control of the House right now.

As a result, getting any anti-gun legislation through would be a monumental task for the president.

But that’s not really what this trip is about.

You see, Biden campaigned on gun control. Gun control groups donated heavily to his campaign for president. Since he’s said he will run for a second term, he needs those groups again.

They’re not going to support him if he’s not at least making the right noises about gun control. Never mind that he’s going to claim credit for the bipartisan gun control bill just passed by Congress a few months ago. It’s not enough.

So, he’ll go to Monterey Park, where he’ll have an audience full of people who already agree with him, and he’ll tell them that he’ll come for the guns.

Either he knows this won’t happen or he really is as senile as some claim.

I’ll withhold judgment on that issue for the here and now.

What I won’t do, though, is withhold judgment regarding the absolute lunacy of calling for gun control while standing in a city that’s evidence of how little gun control does to prevent mass shootings.

Biden is going to be in Monterey Park. In California. A state with over 100 gun control laws on the books and still saw two mass shootings less than two days apart.

It’s idiotic, and yet, here we are.

Then again, “idiotic” can describe so many aspects of the Biden administration’s approach to guns, gun control, and really anything at all to do with firearms.

That’s kind of his brand, at this point, and there’s no one who will tell him it’s not playing well with a large segment of the American population.

Not that he’d listen, even if he had all his marbles, and there’s reason to think he doesn’t.
