CA Man Charged with Trying to Smuggle Guns into Bermuda

One argument popular with anti-gunners is that we need more gun control not just because of our own issues with violence but because guns are smuggled into other nations from the US.

Of course, that's already illegal and that hasn't stopped smugglers, so I fail to see how more gun laws would change anything, but they still think this is a winning argument.

I get where they're coming from, to some degree. In order to do so, you need to understand their premises, namely that gun control makes it harder for bad people to get guns that they could then smuggle elsewhere.

There's nothing to really show that's the case, of course, but some people continue to insist that it's true.

If so, I'd love to hear their explanation for this guy.

An American man was remanded into custody yesterday after he was accused of plotting to smuggle guns, drugs and ammunition into Bermuda.

Jose Humberto Alvarez Tostado Puga, 58, was charged with conspiring with others not before the court to import prohibited weapons, specifically firearms with a barrel length of less than 24 inches, into the island between an unknown date and November 14, 2023.

The Dana Point, California, resident was also charged in Magistrates’ Court with conspiring to import ammunition into the country during the same period without a licence.

Wait...this guy was from California, the state with the most extensive gun laws in the nation, and he was trying to smuggle guns into Bermuda?

Now, admittedly, "firearms with a barrel length of less than 24 inches" isn't exactly a difficult bar to clear here in the US. Even in California, it's not that difficult to get guns that meet that criteria. The article doesn't specify if that only applies to long guns or if pistols are prohibited entirely, though they probably are since most nations have some degree of ban on handguns.

Regardless, California has all the gun control in the world, at least as remotely permissible under the Second Amendment. They've also got quite a few laws I'm pretty sure will eventually be determined to be impermissible under the Second.

Despite that, this individual allegedly conspired to get guns and smuggle them into a nation where they were banned.

In doing so, he showed--allegedly, of course--that the ban in Bermuda is pretty much worthless and that California's extensive gun control laws are insufficient to prevent a determined individual from illegally exporting guns to another country.

That's the thing that a lot of anti-gunners don't get.

Restricting the law-abiding only restricts those inclined to abide by the law. Those who have no regard for it at all aren't inclined to suddenly start caring simply because there's a new law on the books. It's just not going to happen. We've seen how that goes time and time again.

Still, these folks continue to push a false narrative about guns originating here in the United States, claiming that gun control failures in other countries are because of our failure to pass gun control. Yet time and time again, we've seen examples of gun running happening where they come from other places, especially in Europe.

So it's time to knock it off.
