I'm not a fan of rap music myself, but a ton of people are. So be it.
I'm sure a lot of rappers are actually good people, even if some have rough pasts. A lot of the "hard" they project is really just a show and they're about as dangerous as a kitten. Hell, I'm old enough to remember when there was no way I'd want Snoop Dog to watch my kids, and now he's Martha Stewart's BFF and one of the more wholesome entertainers out there, despite his history.
But the problem is that the hip-hop game is still a rough and tumble place with all kinds of rappers getting caught up in all sorts of things.
No, this isn't about P Diddy, though he's another example.
Instead, I'm talking about someone you probably have never heard of, at least not if you don't follow the genre. It seems a rapper named Lil Durk is looking at prison time after he had some of his boys try to kill a rival.
Grammy Award-winning rapper Lil Durk has been arrested on federal charges that he paid for the attempted 2022 revenge killing of rapper Quando Rondo at a Los Angeles gas station.
The shooting, however, resulted in the death of Rondo’s cousin.
Durk, 32, is charged with conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire in the slaying of Saviay’a Robinson, 24, who was gunned down on Aug. 19, 2022, according to an FBI affidavit released Friday.
Five other members of Durk’s Chicago-based rap collective, “Only the Family” or “OTF,” have also been arrested and at least two more arrests may be forthcoming, according to court documents that have been filed.
...
Martin Estrada, the U.S. attorney for Los Angeles, called the shooting “a cold-blooded murder.”
“The shooting occurred in the open, at a gas station at a busy intersection, endangering many others in the area,” Estrada said in a statement. “Violent gun crime of this sort is devastating to our community and we will have zero tolerance for those who perpetrate such callous acts of violence.”
FBI Agent Sarah Corcoran said in her affidavit that OTF members engage “in violence, including murder and assault, at the direction of Banks and to maintain their status in OTF.”
The shooting was in apparent retaliation for the murder of rapper King Von, who was shot and killed in Atlanta after a confrontation with Quando Rondo's crew outside of a hookah lounge in 2020.
Yet here's the thing, these guys are jetting all around the country, committing violent acts in various different cities and states, all without any regard for the gun control laws on the books, and yet folks like you and I are supposed to give up our guns because of their antics?
Don't get me wrong, Rondo's buddy who killed King Von walked because he was acting in self-defense. That's a legitimate response to violent aggression and King Von was a member of the Black Disciples, a notorious Chicago gang. I have no problem believing he pulled a gun on someone he had an altercation with, but he wasn't exactly from Atlanta. This wasn't his hometown
But Lil Durk's boys who reportedly did this were in California. They lived there, worked there, etc. California has the toughest gun laws in the nation, and yet a couple of Temu hitmen were able to get guns and use them to try and murder someone despite all the laws meant to prevent it.
If you look at a lot of these people, their homes and bases of operation aren't in Georgia or some other pro-gun states but are in places like Illinois or California.
And when you have people who think sending others to murder a rival because your buddy got himself killed trying to be a big, scary man, you're never going to curtail it with gun control laws.
