President Donald Trump hasn't exactly taken it easy over the last month. Things have come fast and furious since the first day in office, with every day filled with changes from the mess the Biden administration left behind. It took a few extra days, but we got a pro-gun executive order that directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to review all firearm regulations and identify those that are unconstitutional.
I have some reservations as to just what Bondi might define as unconstitutional--she did vehemently defend the post-Parkland gun laws in Florida, after all--but the gist should still move the needle forward on gun rights. Especially if she does as Trump desires versus following her own inclinations.
John Commerford, the executive director of NRA-ILA, has some thoughts on where Bondi--and, by extension, Trump--should go.
The attorney general now has a presidential directive to examine dozens of orders, regulations, pending lawsuits, international agreements and other activities from various federal government agencies from January 2021 through January 2025. Ms. Bondi’s review will determine whether government agencies, prosecutors or unaccountable bureaucrats have worked to sabotage the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens under the pretext of promoting public safety.
The president’s order asks the attorney general to ensure that any federal policies or agency actions properly align with the protection of Second Amendment rights. Her review and recommendations for change are expected within a month. According to the order’s terms, they will be finalized and implemented in coordination with the domestic policy adviser to the president.
In a statement accompanying his executive order, the president said, “For too long, the Second Amendment has been under attack by those who seek to undermine our freedoms. We will not allow bureaucrats in Washington to erode the freedoms that our Founding Fathers fought to secure.”
We applaud the president for taking such decisive, bold action to protect our constitutional freedoms. As the attorney general moves forward with her investigation, she can recommend many actions to the president and his advisers to restore the rights of law-abiding citizens.
Among the suggestions are an end to the "zero tolerance" policy for gun dealers, which goes way too far and treats honest mistakes as if dealers are selling machine guns to Cub Scouts, killing the pistol brace rule along with the "engaged in the business" rule, a review of the National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center which tries to get states to pass red flag laws, and a number of other measures.
The truth of the matter is that all of that needs to happen and happen as quickly as possible.
The Biden administration did a lot of damage to our rights in just those four years, but the truth is that the damage started well before that. He just took it to new extremes.
If Bondi does as directed, and Trump is able to make everything happen that I suspect the White House has in mind, then the landscape of gun rights will never be the same again.
Unfortunately, that will mean a fight as the mainstream media isn't exactly going to react well to this. We've seen how they react. It won't be with the truth, that's for sure.
Yet, despite those lies from the leftist media, President Donald Trump and his administration were given a mandate to take a chainsaw to the federal government and to restore our gun rights once and for all, and the American people have his back.
