Ah, Florida. The land of insanity.
I spend a bit of time down there because it's pretty close, but the truth is that there are some big problems with the state's gun laws. A recent story, though, caught my eye because it suggests a profound need for sanity in a state known for "Florida Man."
See, it starts with a substitute school teacher in Jacksonville. It seems he had a gun on the school campus, but not in the way some might fear.
A substitute teacher was arrested at Southside Estates Elementary School on Tuesday after two guns, a knife and ammunition were found in his car, police said.
Abdiel Badillo-Martinez, 29, remains behind bars on charges of carrying concealed weapons in elementary/secondary school facility and possession of a short-barreled gun. He was arrested on the school campus.
School officials learned of the issue about 9 a.m. when an employee told a security officer that she had seen a handgun when someone helped Badillo-Martinez get inside his locked car, an arrest report said.
The substitute teacher told a school employee that he had a weapon in his car because he was homeless and had nowhere to keep it.
School district police were contacted and searched his car, finding two guns, a knife and multiple rounds of ammunition, including some in a zippered bag, the report said.
Now, Badillo-Martinez never brought the gun inside the school, never threatened anyone, never did anything except possess a firearm in the parking lot.
If he's actually homeless, but trying to do work as a substitute teacher, then it seems he's someone who is just trying to do his best in a tough world.
And now he's got a "home" of sorts as he's locked up.
I'm sorry, but while I get that not everyone is going to be comfortable with guns inside of a school, can't we at least accept guns in employees' cars in the parking lot? This is a guy who was trying to be as responsible as he probably could be under the circumstances, and now he's locked up for just doing the best that he can.
It's especially hilarious that a guy's mistake is getting him in trouble in Jacksonville, all while the local government was doing something it knew damn good and well was illegal with its registry at the court house and they're trying to brush it off like no big deal.
Let me ask you, which is worse? A homeless guy trying to get back on his feet, leaving a couple of guns in his personal vehicle while he tries to earn some money, or a local government willfully disobeying state law by registering law-abiding gun owners who are complying with state law?
Which is worse?
If you say the guy is the worst one, then you really need your morality meter recalibrated.
Seriously.
What we need in Florida is some sanity, at a minimum. Yes, folks there need laws like open carry and an end to age restrictions on long guns. Waiting periods need to go the way of the dodo, too.
But we also need to not lock up adults who left a gun in their car as they try to earn a living.
Florida should be better than this. I know the Florida Man meme is a thing, and not without valid reason, but I know too many good people in the state for there to be no hope for actual sanity.
This is a minor story. It's one that won't end up on the nightly news, except maybe in Jacksonville itself.
But it should be. It should become a rallying point for all that groups like Florida Carry, the NRA, GOA, NAGR, and the FPC to call down the wrath of God and make a positive change in the state's laws.
