The idea of an assault weapon ban is obviously nothing new. We had one from 1994 to 2004, and it accomplished absolutely nothing. Multiple states have their own, and again, they haven't done anything.
The idea of using a constitutional amendment to ban them isn't even new. California Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to do that as a way to override the Second Amendment, which I suppose means he's acknowledging that everything his state has done on guns is unconstitutional.
Now, though, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz wants to do that, only he's focusing a little more locally.
Having failed to get traction for his gun ban in the legislature, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) is now suggesting a ban on the “sale and possession of assault rifles in the state” via constitutional amendment.
“Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz proposed a new option Saturday for addressing gun violence: A constitutional amendment to ban the sale and possession of assault rifles in the state,” MinnPost reported. “It requires a majority of the Legislature to vote yes to putting a ban on the ballot, and then a majority of voters approving the amendment.”
The problem for Walz with a more traditional approach is that Republicans in the House and Senate aren't interested in an assault weapon ban. It's just not likely to happen, and that's a problem for a gun grabber like himself. He wants to restrict people's rights, and he's got to find a way. If the Senate won't let him, he'll try something else.
Now, a constitutional amendment would also require the legislature's approval, as noted above, but then he can take a different approach. There, Walz and his allies can argue that they're simply allowing the people to make that determination.
This is an appeal to democracy, which is really just an appeal to allow the urban centers to determine the rest of the state. In places like Minneapolis, people see no reason for an AR-15. They see situations like the Annunciation shooting and can't think of literally any other use for such a rifle. They're not in an environment where they're exposed to anything but the worst of humanity when it comes to firearm use.
So, they'll trample on the rights of everyone else. They'll make the call, and then the rest of the state--tens of thousands, or more, who did nothing wrong--will pay the price for that ignorance.
Walz wants an assault weapon ban, and he's willing to try and trick his way into one by making this not about gun control, but "the will of the people" or something else.
Make no mistake, despite his formerly pro-gun record, Walz is not an ally of ours in any way. For all his talk of being a great shooter in his failed vice presidential campaign, he's the epitome of the term "Fudd."
And he's going out of his way to prove it with his every move.
Go ahead and start putting the pressure on lawmakers in the state to make sure he doesn't get the chance. Do it now and keep it up so he's just spinning his wheels and dealing with disappointment.
After this past November, he should be used to it.
