The city of Baltimore has a lot of history, but the more recent history involved a whole lot of violent crime. It was one of the most crime-ridden cities in the nation, per capita, and it's no surprise that anti-gun politicians in Maryland used that crime to push for gun control.
It's kind of what they do.
However, Baltimore is doing something kind of radical that doesn't involve gun control, and it seems to be paying dividends.
They're arresting people for breaking the law.
The top prosecutor for Baltimore, Maryland, seems to have uncovered a key aspect of his job: Locking up crooks. It seems as though, if you lock up convicted criminals, crime rates drop. Yes, really; many of us have been confronted at one point or another with the laughably stupid leftist claims, "If our crime rates are dropping, why do we have so many people in prison?"
The key, of course, is that crime rates are dropping because the goblins are locked up. A minority of goblins account for a majority of violent crime, and Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates has a good bead on that principle. Good for him.
After years of surging violence, Baltimore’s top prosecutor says the tide is finally turning — because his office is taking repeat violent offenders off the streets.
"We had to let the criminal element know that it was a new day, that there was accountability and that you will go to prison," said Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates told Fox News Digital.
Bates said his crime-fighting platform was built around one promise: go after the people doing the most damage.
"When we came into office two years ago, I ran on a platform of going after repeat violent offenders… those were the individuals that we knew were causing the terror in our communities," he said.
"If you are a violent repeat offender, you are our number one target, our number one focus, and we need to remove you from the street," Bates continued.
These are precisely the people who need to be removed from Baltimore's streets. At least one study - not a poll, an actual scientific analysis of data - done in Sweden, shows that roughly one percent of the population is responsible for 67 percent of violent crimes. The United States Sentencing Commission has a wealth of data on such recidivism among violent offenders.
Wow. What a radical notion.
Seriously, we've long known that the violence in any community is usually centered around a small number of people who are usually known to police from way back. It's the same people causing the same problems, and this soft-on-crime approach many Democrats seem to favor just isn't cutting it.
Especially when the result of that soft-on-crime approach is almost universally used to target law-abiding gun owners with gun control laws that will have no impact on the same criminals that are causing the problems and being coddled by politicians.
Targeting the people who cause serious damage to the community and who do so repeatedly is bound to yield results in short order. That's going to drop the crime rate significantly.
From there, you can take different approaches to reduce criminality.
Look, I'm a big believer that the secret to reducing crime long-term is to help people avoid going down that dark pathway in the first place. However, when people are already on that road, you can't just nudge them back onto the straight and narrow. You have to be prepared to hammer them with the law until they're locked up.
Then, if they learn their lesson, we can talk. Most don't, and so keeping them locked up for a good long time makes the most sense.
Baltimore is taking the necessary steps to make their city safer.
Now, if only lawmakers would knock it off with the gun control nonsense.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
