Anytime I see a headline similar to what's above, I kind of get riled up. The reason is that I've seen too many young people get in trouble for simply exercising their Second Amendment rights. Kids have those rights, too, though they're often restricted more than those of their parents. That's because, well, they're kids. They don't get the totality of their rights.
But schools don't have any grounds to punish them for what they do away from school, especially when it's legal.
The problem is that sometimes, the kid actually does cross the line, and the arrest is warranted.
Fort Zumwalt East High School is addressing the community following a “disturbing” post that showed one of its students with a loaded gun on campus on Tuesday.
According to Superintendent Dr. Henry St. Pierre, in the post, the student was inside one of the school’s bathrooms, which assisted police and school officials in removing them from campus.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of our students and staff, and appropriate discipline will be implemented according to district policy,” St. Pierre said.
Now, there doesn't seem to have been a specific threat, but there was a gun on the campus, and that's a big no-no, especially for a student. The fact that he posted a pic of himself in the school bathroom tells me that it's unlikely he was a mass killer in the making, but some wannabe thug who thought posing with a gun would make him look cool.
The report didn't include where his parents were or why they weren't keeping at least some eye on his social media, but in this day and age, a lot of parents just don't. It's pathetic.
Or worse, they didn't care what he posted, that he had a gun, or that he had one at school. That would be even worse.
Every parent has to decide for themselves how responsible their child is when it comes to firearms. I've seen too many reports of teenagers protecting themselves or someone else with a family gun for me to believe that all access should be severed for all minors. Yet some kinds have no business having access because they're just irresponsible. They'll probably grow out of it, but for now, they're just not ready.
But parents have to make that decision. They have to be part of that, and they need to enforce it.
The fact that this little twerp was posing with a gun in the school bathroom (allegedly) tells me that he's not just too immature to handle that responsibility, but that he's too stupid to handle it, either.
What bothers me about this, beyond the kid being a moron and wannabe gang-banger, apparently, is that we've seen too many kids get in trouble over nothing for me to see these headlines without having to wonder if it's one of those cases or what this particular one turned out to be.
Not every kid with a picture of a gun on Facebook is the same. It's way past time for the media to stop treating them like they are.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
