Elected Lewiston, Maine Official in Hot Seat Following Indictment for Gun Theft

Lewiston, Maine, isn't a place most of us had heard about before the mass shooting there. Maine isn't a highly populated state, so it's not really the center of attention for most of us.

Yet the Lewiston shooting changed a lot there. While the state had been pretty pro-gun despite being deeply blue, it has embraced a number of anti-gun measures in the aftermath.

None of those, however, seemed to do much to stop the alleged actions of a city council member-elect in Lewiston, who is not having the best year ever.

Iman Osman, 36, who was elected in November to represent Ward 5 on the Lewiston City Council, was indicted Wednesday on two counts involving the alleged theft of two firearms between November 2023 and October 2024.

The charges compound an already volatile situation surrounding whether Osman legally resides in the ward he is set to represent.

Indictment Deepens Uncertainty Ahead of Swearing-In

The criminal indictment adds a new layer of uncertainty as Osman approaches his scheduled swearing-in early next year. Under state law and city charter provisions, officials have indicated there is no mechanism allowing the city to remove a councilor-elect prior to taking office.

Local residents have signaled they are preparing to challenge Osman’s qualifications through statutory channels once he is sworn in, particularly if he continues to refuse to disclose a lawful address in Ward 5.

Basically, Osman claimed he lived in a building that was condemned in 2024 after a drug raid. While there's some permitting activity, there's no way Osman can legally live where he says he lives, which is necessary for him to actually represent that particular ward.

Which is small potatoes compared to two alleged gun thefts.

Of course, I don't need to remind you that stealing guns is illegal, and despite all the gun control laws Maine has passed recently, there's absolutely no way they did anything to stop him from stealing guns, should he be guilty of the crime.

Funny how that shakes out, ain't it?

Osman, who is apparently a Somali immigrant, isn't exactly helping the case that many are trying to make that President Trump is being unfair toward Somalis. It seems a nation that thrives on piracy these days also has a number of people engaging in fraud here in the US, particularly in Minnesota, and then we have Osman, who is allegedly doing crap like this in Lewiston.

Frankly, I don't care if he's Somali or Salami. What I care about is that Maine has beaten the anti-gun drum since Lewiston, though nothing they've passed would have stopped that awful atrocity, and while they've done it, this guy is allegedly stealing guns while also getting elected to public office despite reportedly not living in the ward he was elected to represent.

It's absolutely insane.

If I wrote a work of fiction based on this, I don't know that anyone would believe it unless I told them outright what I'm basing things on. Even then, they'd say I embellished.

The truth really is stranger than fiction. That's because fiction has to make sense. The truth? Not so much.
