On Saturday, Cam wrote about Canada's re-evaluation of whether to ban the SKS rifle. They've banned a ton of stuff already, of course, but the SKS has been...delayed.
And honestly, in the process, they're showing just how idiotic their entire gun control scheme is.
See, the problem with the SKS, which is a great rifle in so many ways, is that they seem to think that only certain ones are an issue.
A new report from an expert panel struck to help guide the Liberals’ efforts to ban firearms shows the government appears to have ignored parts of its advice when it comes to certain makes of the SKS semi-automatic rifle.
That make of firearm has proven to be among the most controversial for the Liberals when it comes to the government’s list of more than 2,500 makes and models of guns it has banned since 2020.The Liberals have hesitated for more than a year about whether they would prohibit the purchase or sale of the SKS, illustrating how thorny the issue is for the party viewed by gun lobby groups as “anti-gun.” In October, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree repeatedly told the Commons Security committee that he was awaiting advice from an “expert panel” before deciding if the government would ban the purchase or sale of SKS semi-automatic rifles. “The determination about the SKS is with an expert committee, an expert panel — that is, with law enforcement — and it is up to law enforcement to make their recommendation. At this point, there is no recommendation about this,” he told MPs on Oct. 9.
It turns out that the panel issued its recommendations nearly one year earlier: prohibit, or at least restrict, “more recent” models with detachable magazines of the now popular hunting weapon. The panel cited one specific make: the Kodiak Defence Scorpio SKS-15.
Now, keep in mind that the model in question only has a 10-round magazine. The SKS normally carries 10 rounds. The only difference is that a detachable magazine is used in the Kodiak Defense model, versus the stripper clips of the standard SKS.
(It should be noted that there are weapons such as the SKS-D that take AK magazines, and those aren't relevant to this particular discussion, though they're cool as hell.)
In other words, there's no difference in round capacity between the two, just a different way to reload it, and the truth is that when you practice with them, the SKS stripper clips can be pretty damn quick. I know, I've got a couple of the rifles, and I absolutely love them. They're not my go-to for the end of the world, but I wouldn't feel bad handing them out to buddies who don't have a gun of their own.
Plus, because of the way stripper clips are built, they're less bulky than a 10-round box magazine ever will be.
So, in some ways, they're basically saying they're cool with the standard SKS and the fact that it actually has advantages over the Kodiak Defense weapon, but that's because one evil feature that doesn't make a damn bit of difference in the grand scheme of things isn't present.
If that doesn't sum everything up about how idiotic this whole thing is, then what does?
One issue you're always going to find with regard to these kinds of laws is that they're written by non-gun people. They have things in their heads that they're absolutely sure are true, when they're not. Think about the ATF's so-called gun expert trying to take down a Glock, for example. Think about the idiocy spouted by Everytown and Giffords's "experts" to the news media.
Remember President Joe Biden talking about how 9mm would blow out your lung?
Yeah, he was told that by someone who was sure they knew what they were talking about.
This is no different.
The one gun talked about specifically is an SKS model that has practically no advantages over the standard SKS except that it looks scarier.
Granted, I kind of want one now, but mostly that's because Canadians are wetting themselves over it.
