So, how was your weekend? Anything eventful happen?
Of course, we all know what happened. It was a bad weekend for way too many people, in part because of two shootings on opposite sides of the planet.
The killings had nothing ostensibly to do with one another from what we can tell. One seems to be a mentally ill individual in the United States and the other looks to be an act of terrorism.
But let's get into them, including the political aftermath, starting with Brown University.
As we reported earlier Saturday, a terrifying situation unfolded on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, when an active shooter went on an apparent rampage and shot multiple students. The latest tragic count stands at two dead, nine injured.
The suspect is still on the loose, and there is scant information on who it is and what their motivation might be. However, authorities have now released video footage of the subject apparently departing from the crime scene:

— Brian Crandall (@nbc10_brian) December 14, 2025Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said that seven of the wounded are in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital, and that all 11 victims were identified as students. The shooting occurred inside a classroom, he also revealed.
There has been a change from that report, of course, which dated to last night. They've arrested a person of interest, who they then released. I'm not naming the individual because I don't want to encourage these knobs by feeding into their delusions of adequacy with their name showing up all over the place, and this guy might actually be responsible.
Or might not.
Anyway, this was an awful tragedy, and the usual suspects immediately jumped into screaming about gun control.
First, this guy used handguns. In fact, at least one report mentions a revolver being used at some point in the shooting. It being equipped with a laser is what led police to believe they had the right guy, apparently, but that didn't stop the screaming.
Of course, Rhode Island has extensive gun control laws, including things like red flag laws and universal background checks. The individual who was detained and then released was from Wisconsin, though, which means those laws didn't do much.
And some have latched onto that, arguing that no one believes gun control can work without federal laws, which sort of means that every time they celebrate a state-level gun control law, claiming it will save lives, they're lying and they know it.
But again, Brown University wasn't the only place touched by horror.
At least 12 people (including one gunman) were killed in a targeted terrorist attack against the Jewish community during a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney's Bondi Beach on Sunday evening.
The shooting occurred around 6:45 p.m. local time in Archer Park near the Bondi Pavilion, where over 1,000 people had gathered for an event known as "Chanukah by the Sea 2025."
The event was to celebrate the first night of the Jewish holiday, Hanukkah, but two armed men broke the peaceful celebration when they began to open fire from a bridge.
One gunman has reportedly been killed, while another has been taken into custody in critical condition, officials said. Another 29 individuals are known to have been wounded in the attack at this time.
Videos of the attack have surfaced on social media.

These killers used shotguns and bolt-action rifles, which are perfectly legal in Australia and throughout the world, even if they're not easy to get for most folks.
Watching a video of one of the killers working the bolt was kind of jarring. I won't say that it betrays military training or anything, but it does betray some kind of training. The guy knew how to run his weapon, and he never moved his eyes off target. He knew what he was doing.
And he ran that weapon damn near as quickly as a semi-auto would fire.
But, of course, here in the United States, much of the debate wasn't about the failure of Australian gun control. No, it was how Australian gun control prevented it from being so much worse.
Alternatively, they would have killed a lot more people if they’d had access to more powerful firearms. https://t.co/gRSbdhC0sd

Of course, we have Kostas Moros on our side.
This is silly, they killed 12 people and injured about that many more. That would be a pretty big mass shooting here too.

Of course guns have differing levels of capability to inflict harm, but when you are shooting at unarmed people and any response is delayed, it doesn't… https://t.co/NrtFukHQja
Post continues:
Of course guns have differing levels of capability to inflict harm, but when you are shooting at unarmed people and any response is delayed, it doesn't matter as much if your gun fires a bit slower.
That's absolutely true.
Plus, let's note that many bolt-action rifles are actually more powerful per shot than many AR-style rifles. And, as Moros notes, when no one can fight back, it doesn't really matter if there's another second or so between shots.
Oh, and for the "just call the police" crowd, we a have this gem.

It took an unarmed citizen risking his life to take down one of the gunmen. He couldn't shoot the gun, so he had to catch him unaware and tackle him. That's risky, and he's a damn hero for doing it, but when the police are there, it shouldn't be necessary.
It was.
Once again, Islamic terror shows that the best way to fight terrorism is with an armed populace and that gun control cannot and will not stop would-be mass killers from slaughtering the innocent.
Yeah, these haven't been common since Port Arthur, but they weren't common before Port Arthur, either, so that claim doesn't fly, especially considering the population disparity between the United States and Australia.
It was an awful weekend for far too many people, but it was a bad one for the anti-gunners, even if they're too mentally stunted to recognize that fact.
