Canadian Gun Control Group Blasts Ottawa Over 'Weak' Gun Law Compliance

Canadians are typically far more docile and compliant than we are. Sure, they're known for things like hockey, devil geese, and war crimes, but that's how they get their hate out so they're polite the rest of the time.

Right?

Anyway, we all know there's a ton of gun laws going into effect, including a mandatory "buy back" of all those icky, evil "assault weapons" that no one needs unless you actually need a gun to fight for your life with.

Currently, in order to get money for your gun from the Canadian version of Uncle Sam, you have to declare your firearm to the government. Otherwise, you have to just destroy it and get nothing for your trouble. They expected a whole lot of people to declare their guns. They've gotten less than half of the declarations they expected.

And a gun control group up that way is a tad miffed about it.

Gun control advocacy group PolySeSouvient blames “weak political leadership” for what it calls “poor participation” in a federal compensation program for banned firearms.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said Tuesday that gun owners had reported more than 52,000 firearms to the government with one week left to go in the program to provide compensation for banned guns.

That figure is well short of the 136,000 firearms for which the Liberal government set aside compensation money when the buyback for individual owners opened in January.

...

Quebec supports the federal compensation program but a number of other provinces and territories — including Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador — have snubbed the plan.

Saskatchewan has introduced amendments to the province’s firearms law it says will help gun owners and businesses receive fair compensation for their property.

It says once the changes pass, Saskatchewan firearms owners and businesses will be able to apply for a certificate of exemption allowing them to continue to possess and store their lawfully owned — but now prohibited — firearms on behalf of the province.

Saskatchewan says these certificates will remain in place until firearms owners are fairly compensated by the federal government.

PolySeSouvient says such tactics may have led many gun owners to believe they will be exempted from the federal ban, contributing to low participation in Ottawa’s compensation program.

“Minister Anandasangaree has not provided gun owners with a realistic perspective regarding the feasibility or constitutionality of such political and legal manoeuvrings,” the group’s statement said.

“He should, at the very least and immediately, promise that Ottawa will challenge any legal tactic that counters the federal government’s authority to prohibit the private ownership of specific weapons.”

PolySeSouvient is also upset that the SKS isn't included in the list of prohibited guns. They should get over that, because the SKS is a very popular, once ridiculously inexpensive rifle that's useful for all kinds of activities, including hunting. It's particularly popular with Canada's indigenous communities, and they're not fond of the government taking their guns.

It's almost like the original inhabitants of North America have a reason to be skeptical of the government disarming them. I wonder where they got such a notion.

On a more serious note, I honestly think gun control groups as a whole have to get a grip on themselves. They're universally convinced that every victory of theirs should be applauded by everyone, while they will complain and moan about every setback indefinitely. They think that the people of Canada, in this case, should just blindly trust that their government will never turn on them or anything because that's just silly.

It's not like Canada hasn't tried to fine people over jokes, nor that they're considering "hate speech" legislation, which is a direct attack on the freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

I can't imagine why someone might not want to comply with a government that is destroying the very fabric of the nation's gun culture, not just with this, but also a freeze on all handgun sales, even as criminals still trade them readily.

I say good for those who are thumbing their nose at the government on this. Yeah, they might get caught, but they also might be what saves the country sooner or later.
