The Absolute Stupidity of Connecticut's Glock Ban

Connecticut crossed a line. They're not the first to do it, admittedly, but as the most recent to do so, they're going to draw all of the heat. The line they crossed was in banning firearms like the Glock, which can be converted via an illegal third-party-designed device to shoot full-auto. Glock has never approved of it, never sold the switches, or anything like that, but now they're being demonized for people doing something they can't legally do anywhere.

And the entire thing is beyond stupid.

In fact, it's probably even dumber than you think.

Second Amendment advocates may rightly wonder what happens next. Is this the proverbial slippery slope? Are semiautomatic rifles next – or whatever the next handgun to be illegally modified happens to be?

The Absurdity of Gun Control – Or Is It Malfeasance?

It’s already a crime both federally and in all 50 states to modify a semiautomatic weapon to make it fully automatic. It’s also illegal already to murder people – with or without automatic weapons or even firearms at all. If criminalizing bad behavior worked to begin with, we’d already live in a world free from violence. But if a murderer doesn’t mind breaking the law to cancel another person’s subscription to life, why would he or she be all that concerned about some new rule regarding gun types?

But not only is the law practically pointless from the whole preventing-crimes perspective, it’s also a gross overreaction to a non-existent problem. The last time someone was killed with a machine gun in Connecticut was … well, according to testimony submitted to the state legislature regarding this very bill, there is no record in state history of it ever happening.

Just how big of an issue is gun violence in general in Connecticut? Even the anti-gun Giffords Law Center shows just 234 total gun deaths in the state in 2024 – and 53% of them were suicides.

That's right, they banned these guns because they can be illegally converted to a machine pistol via a device that's illegal to make, buy, or possess, to address the problem of machine guns in the state that has resulted in absolutely no fatalities ever.

Seriously.

Plus, as noted above, banning a thing doesn't stop that thing. If it did, the ban on murder and various forms of mayhem should be more than sufficient. The fact that it's not is ample evidence that such a law won't ban people from getting guns and converting them. They're already banned from doing so, and they do it, so what good does banning Glocks and similar striker-fired guns do?

Nothing.

Especially as we all know that if there's a demand for a product, even if it's illegal, there will be someone who will seek to fill it. Prohibition didn't stop people from drinking. It just created criminal empires among those who stepped in to sell it in violation of the law. Glocks are common enough on the black market, usually due to theft or some other method of getting them illegally, to stop them from ending up in criminal hands in Connecticut.

And since it's addressing what is clearly a non-problem, that makes it even dumber.

Honestly, that's the point that takes this from a place like California or Illinois doing it, where it's still dumb, but at least we know these modified firearms have been used to take lives, to a level of moronic beyond what we normally expect from a state like Connecticut.
