I don't expect much out of Gavin Newsom besides hair gel and terrible decisions. Somehow, though, he's still a frontrunner for the next Democratic nomination for president. Absolutely weird.
His latest bad decision was to attack the Supreme Court's decision in Wolford, where they struck down the so-called vampire rule.
Newsom, like most anti-gunners, has a problem with the decision, but his attempt to make a point was hilariously bad. Let's start with his argument first.
Gun laws keep people safe. This ruling by Trump’s Supreme Court will only endanger people.

If Justice Alito really thinks people need guns to go to the grocery store “for self-defense,” this country is truly broken. https://t.co/qloRBKBy5n
Now, first, let's understand that all Wolford really did was say that the presumption should be that rights are permitted unless explicitly denied by the owner. A grocery store still has the authority to say "no guns allowed" if they want. They can either ask people carrying to leave in states that don't allow businesses to make that call, or they can put a sign on the door in the other states. No one is really forced to accept guns on their property...and the vampire rule is new, so it's not like this is upsetting the status quo.
But let's talk a little more about the second part. It's somehow wrong that Justice Alito thinks people should be able to carry guns to the grocery store? Well, I guess since there's never been a mass shooting at a grocery store, maybe Newsom has a point.
I mean, except for 1999, when a man killed four people in a Las Vegas Albertson's supermarket. But that was totally the last one.
Except for in 2011, when Gabby Giffords was shot. Six people were killed, and 13 others besides Giffords were injured at a Tucson grocery store.
Or the 2019 shooting in an El Paso Walmart that left 23 people dead and 22 injured.
Or another incident in 2019, when three people were killed in a kosher grocery store in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Oh, then there was the 2021 King Sooper's shooting in Boulder, Colorado, where 10 people were killed, and one innocent person was injured. And another one that year in Collierville, Tennessee, where one person was killed, 14 injured.
Then there was the 2022 shooting at Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, New York, where 10 people were killed and three injured, followed by another shooting in a grocery store that year. Two people were killed, and another was injured in a grocery store shooting in Bend, Oregon.
Let's also not forget about the shooting at a Chesapeake, VA, Walmart, where a night supervisor killed six coworkers and injured four others.
And no, that's hardly all of them.
Except for those, there are absolutely no examples of why someone would legitimately feel the need to carry a gun to a grocery store...though, admittedly, I didn't include any examples of more pedestrian crimes, such as when this guy--who I think I worked with for a little while at a temp job--went nuts and stabbed some random dude while suffering from a psychotic break.
See, what made Newsom's take so hilariously bad was that it was so hilariously easy to rip to shreds. There have been enough high-profile mass killings at grocery stores that it shouldn't be that hard to understand why someone would want to carry in a grocery store.
Had Newsom said that the fact that someone would legitimately see a need to carry in a grocery store, then our country is broken, I'd have a harder time arguing with him. The fact that we have these killings isn't a great sign for our country.
He didn't say that, though. He acted as if Alito was nuts for thinking that people had the right to carry in such a place unless specifically barred, and that the idea of feeling the need to carry to the grocery store was equally crazy.
Clearly, it's not.
Then again, this is Gavin Newsom. I'm pretty sure wherever he actually lives, it's not reality.
