Everytown Still Upset Trump Administration Won't Bend the Knee Like Biden's Did

I personally think President Donald Trump, despite the demonizing rhetoric in his first term, really did try to be reasonable. He said bombastic things at times, but his actual actions were generally mild. He even threw a bone to anti-gunners when he directed the ATF to reclassify bump stocks as machine guns.

Granted, I suspect someone in the administration knew it would never survive in the courts, but that's neither here nor there.

You see, despite that, they kept calling him a Nazi, a racist, and everything else other than a decent human being, and then we had some...irregularities with the election, which Trump legitimately believes was stolen from him, a view he shares with millions of others. 

As a result, now that he's back in office, he's not playing so nicely with the left, and that includes gun control activists, who are now very upset about the Trump administration rolling back some ATF rules.

In April 2026, the Trump administration Department of Justice and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) — the agency whose job is to enforce our gun laws and oversee the gun industry — announced over 30 new rules that put the gun industry’s profits ahead of your safety.

They don't make us less safe, but I know Everytown isn't going to say that.  I will say it's pretty dope to see, though. I'm loving life, and the fact that Everytown, Brady, and Giffords aren't just makes this moment all the more golden.

Their tears are like the finest bourbon, at least for now.

These rules would make sweeping and dangerous changes to federal gun safety regulations that, in ATF’s own words, could result in “greater” and “increased” risks to public safety. In two rules, ATF even admits that these changes could lead to and “mass casualties.” For an agency whose mission is to protect the public from violent gun crime, that’s outrageous and unacceptable. 

These rules would also create other risks that make all of us less safe:

• More opportunities for prohibited persons, dangerous individuals, and violent criminals to obtain firearms without a background check because of background check loopholes
• More unsolved gun crimes, which will make it harder for law enforcement to hold shooters and suppliers accountable
• More irresponsible gun dealer conduct thanks to even less industry regulation, oversight, and accountability  

Those are bold claims. 

Let's look at them for a moment, shall we?

First, the "more opportunities" thing is about the changes that allow you to have a gun shipped to your home from an in-state dealer if they follow certain procedures. We've already debunked that claim. 

Next, the "unsolved crimes" thing is because one of the rules reduces the burden of holding onto records indefinitely. I'm unmoved by this argument, and not just because it amuses me that Everytown is upset. I'm unmoved because the cases of actual crimes being solved because of tracing data are so rare that I and others have looked and can't find a single example of it. There may be one out there, but that doesn't dismiss the point that this isn't the thing they want people to know.

Plus, let's be real. After 20 years, I think the data isn't going to be useful anymore anyway.

The "irresponsible gun dealer" nonsense is really just an end to the Biden-era "zero tolerance" policy that stripped dealers of their FFLs for such horrific violations as abbreviating counties or looking at the clock wrong.

And then we have the claims about "mass casualties." Neither that phrase nor “potential mass casualty events” can be found in the regulation proposals at Regulation.gov, except for the latter in reference to bump stocks in 2018. This isn't the first time one of the anti-gun groups has claimed the ATF used this language regarding the new regulations, but not a single one has provided a lick of context or even a link showing just those phrases.

In other words, it sure as hell looks like they're making up crap and hoping no one calls them on anything. All they had to do was include a single link for the phrases in question, and they didn't. We're supposed to take their claims at face value, but considering their incentives, anyone who does so is colossally dumb.

Frankly, they should cry harder. I want to stay hydrated. It's hot in Southwest Georgia these days.
