For me, starting off a post is one of the most difficult things I do. It's hard enough on a good day. It's even worse when it's a bad day.
And this news makes it a very bad day.
Eight people are dead, including kids, in Eerie, PA in a mass shooting. The suspect is also dead, but...well, here's the story.
Nine people, including children, died in a mass murder on Friday in Erie, Pennsylvania, after a gun-wielding attacker opened fire outside a home and then entered the property, according to authorities.
The suspected attacker was also found dead as police responded to the deadly violence, which triggered a standoff involving Erie police officers and tactical teams.
Police discovered the killings at about 5pm when officers were called to a residence following reports of gunfire. Witnesses told authorities that they had seen an attacker with a gun outside the property before making his way inside.
Responding officers discovered two women lying dead in the street, both having suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
The situation quickly developed into a standoff as police officers and tactical personnel surrounded the residence. More gunshots were heard coming from inside the home, and officers entered the place.
Inside, police said they made a devastating discovery, finding seven additional victims, including children, along with the suspected attacker. Investigators believe the attacker died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Look, I don't have any pithy to say about this. It's awful on every level, only made worse because children were victims.
I feel like there's a story here, and it's one that I'm sure we'll find out about in the coming days and weeks, but for now, what we know is bad enough.
And yes, that's before we get into all the ways this will become political. It shouldn't. We should be able to mourn these people in peace, focusing on their lives and justice for them should anyone else be involved here. That's all that should matter.
But for too many people, this is what they seem to live for. It's a chance for them to make a huge deal about guns, often before we know a damn thing about what just transpired.
Which forces us to get on the defensive from the start, rather than facing the fact that eight people are dead, and at least some of them were complete innocents, if not all of them.
In the coming days and weeks, though, we'll find out more. We'll have the discussions and look at what happened, seeing it through the lens of the gun control crowd, as well as seeing it through our own. We'll have these discussions and debates, then we'll see people introduce laws because of this, and some might actually look like a real response to what happened.
But it won't be. Don't fool yourself.
No, it'll be the stuff they always wanted, because that's why it sure as hell looks like they enjoy this sort of thing. It's not a tragedy to them, but an opportunity, and that will never not turn my stomach.
Until then, let's just mourn these people and wait for more information.
