Poll: Massachusetts Pro-Gun Ballot Initiative Likely Doomed

Massachusetts has the reputation of being one of the most anti-gun states in the country, and it's done absolutely nothing to dispel it in the least. In fact, it looks like most people enjoy it, so I was surprised when a ballot initiative seeking to repeal some state gun control laws made it on the ballot.

Unfortunately, the latest polling suggests that's as far as the surprises will go.

Question 9, which asks voters whether to uphold a 2024 state law that updated state gun laws, has 49% saying they would definitely vote yes. The poll found another 21% said they would probably vote yes.

Of course, we don't quite know how these questions were asked. If, for example, they say the laws simply "updated" the state's gun control measures, then it's unsurprising that nearly three-quarters of those polled are likely to support it.

But the laws did more than that. They created penalties for the centuries-old practice of building your own guns, for one thing. It expanded who could request a red flag order to include school administrators and hospital personnel. It was a major overhaul, not a simple "update."

And it's wrong.

However, this is also Massachusetts, and that fact pains me in ways that are difficult to describe.

The American Revolution started there, in Lexington and Concord, because the British showed up intending to seize guns. The militia stood firm and sparked a movement that would change the entire world. Now, the people grabbing guns are men and women of Massachusetts. It's ironic in all the worst ways.

If the numbers in this poll are remotely accurate, then it means gun rights are likely doomed in Massachusetts for now and for decades to come, at least without court intervention. I think the opposition to repeal is overstated, if for no other reason than that's just how polling has gone in recent years.

What the people of Massachusetts would do well to remember is that guns aren't just about having a particular political persuasion, but about protecting the things that matter. Since so many people think Trump is a fascist authoritarian, then they might want to rethink their anti-gun stance.

After all, how do you keep an authoritarian from taking power? Don't tell me voting, because an authoritarian won't care about the outcome of an election. They'll just use the power they have to make it impossible to remove them.

No, the only way you can make sure there are "no kings," is to be prepared to fight back against the establishment of a tyrannical regime. If that's Trump, why are they counting on an election to handle everything?

"But the military-"

The military leans overwhelmingly rightward. Some of the officer corps might not, but even there, the combat arms guys are much more likely to back Trump.

That means people will need to act, but Massachusetts and other states have neutered themselves too much beyond any reasonable standard.

And now they're likely to vote to uphold that level of hubris. Nothing about this is shocking, really, beyond the question making it onto the ballot. Then again, with same-day registration also on the ballot, is it any wonder just where they intend to roll?
