The Buckeye State Expands Concealed Carry Laws

The Ohio state senate has passed legislation expanding concealed carry across the Buckeye state. Concealed carriers are now allowed to carry in places that were once off-limits: schools, college campuses, daycares and private aircrafts. The bill passed 23-9.

“The intent for this legislation is to clean up the current confusing law and allow law-abiding citizens to exercise their Second Amendment right,” said Representative Ron Maag, the bill’s sponsor. “The bulk of House Bill 48 addresses forbidden carry zones and makes changes that only apply to those legally permitted to carry a concealed weapon.”

One of the other main aspects of the bill involves dropping the penalty for concealed carrying without a permit. Previously, carrying a gun concealed without a permit would be a felony. The passage of HB 48 now makes it a minor misdemeanor if the person can obtain a CCW permit within 10 days of the violation.

Law enforcement is divided on the bill. The Buckeye State Sheriffs’ Association supports the bill, while the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police and the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association oppose it.
