Fort Lee was put on lockdown for a period of time this morning due to an “active shooter incident.” Despite the fact that military bases have weapons locked in secured armories, military bases are “gun free zones” where only military and civilian law enforcement are typically armed.

Soldiers only have access to military weapons when going to firing ranges, and private firearms are strictly controlled on base.

Early reports suggest that the shooting was not an attempted mass shooting, but was instead a possible attempted suicide:

An “active shooter” incident at the Fort Lee Army base in central Virginia Monday morning ended with a female soldier apparently attempting suicide, officials said.

The incident took place about 9 a.m. at a four-story building on the base that serves as the headquarters for the Army’s Combined Arms Support Command.

The base was placed on temporary lockdown and personnel were to enact “active shooter” protocols after the soldier was spotted with a gun in the building.

There is no word on the condition of the soldier at this time.
