Gun ownership has hit record highs in the United States at the precise moment that per-capita firearms homicides are the lowest they’ve ever been in recorded history.
What a brilliant time for the National Basketball Association to stick it to their fan base by jumping on board for a gun control campaign with Michael Bloomberg’s often-discredited Everytown for Gun Safety.
The National Basketball Association, alarmed by the death toll from shootings across the country, is stepping directly into the polarizing debate over guns, regulation and the Second Amendment with an unusual advertising campaign in partnership with one of the nation’s most aggressive advocates of stricter limits on firearm sales.
In a move with little precedent in professional sports, the N.B.A. is putting the weight of its multibillion-dollar brand and the prestige of its star athletes behind a series of television commercials calling for an end to gun violence.
“Gun violence” is now and has always been a myth, especially the dishonest tally compiled by gun control supporters. They include accidents, suicides, and justifiable homicides (self-defense shootings) to inflate a figure than should only include criminal homicides a whopping 375%.
The NBA’s decision to push Everytown’s dishonest propaganda is especially obnoxious when we consider how armed citizens in NBA cities such as Detroit have answered the call of law enforcement officers to carry concealed weapons to thwart crime.
American sporting leagues such as the NBA and NFL have come under fire in recent years as they’ve decided to step into the political arena.
We don’t see how joining forces with an organization like Everytown which has continually lied about 100+ million America’s gun owners is a remotely rational decision, especially as lawful gun ownership among the young and urban markets is surging and violent crime continues a multi-decade decline.
Perhaps the NBA simply thinks they have too much revenue and too many fans, and needs to reduce their fan base and alienate a third of the country. If so, taking on a cause championed by old white liberals who don’t watch professional sports in the first place is a brilliant way to do it.
Update: By the way, we’d almost forgotten that Everytown benefactor Mike Bloomberg wants minority males disarmed.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire behind Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Moms Demand Action, and Everytown for Gun Safety, has attempted to block the release of his February 6 rant in front of a small crowd at the Aspen Institute.
Once you listen to audio of his statements, you’ll understand why.
“It’s controversial, but first thing is all of your — 95 percent of your murders, and murderers, and murder victims fit one [unintelligible]. You can just take the description, Xerox it, and pass it out to all of the cops. They are male, minorities, 15 to 25. That’s true in New York, it’s true in virtually every city in America,” said Bloomberg.
“You’ve got to get the guns out of the hands of the people getting killed,” he continued. “First thing you can do to help that group is to keep them alive.”
It is quite stunning that the media and activists have not challenged the former Mayor’s comments asserting that young minority males should be disarmed.
Would they stand mute if Michael Bloomberg had claimed that young minority males do not deserve the right to free speech (First Amendment), protections against unreasonable search and seizure (Fourth Amendment), the right remain silent (Fifth Amendment), or the right to a speedy and fair trial (Sixth Amendment)?
