A man involved in a road rage incident in south Florida is deceased after attacking an armed citizen. Fortunately for the victim of the road-raging attacker, his girlfriend was smart enough to videotape the confrontation, which was supported by other eyewitness accounts as well.
There are no happy endings here, but at least the man who was attacked will likely avoid jail time.
A man who shot and killed another driver during a road rage incident may have done so in self-defense, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
The incident happened just after 6 p.m. Sunday shot in the 1300 block of Southwest 48th Avenue in unincorporated Central Broward near Fort Lauderdale.
On Monday, BSO said Jack Bellino, 28, and Don William Alvarez, 27, were heading in opposite directions when Bellino “may have accidentally swerved into Alvarez’s lane,” BSO said in a release.
That’s when Alvarez made a U-turn and followed Bellino, BSO said. At some point Bellino Shot Alvarez, who later died.
BSO said in a statement “homicide detectives said the statements provided by Bellino and Alvarez’s girlfriend were consistent with eyewitness accounts and her cell phone video that suggested the shooting was a result of self defense.”
It’s horrible that Bellino was forced to shoot Alvarez over this, and we can of course never know precisely why Alvarez took a driving mistake so personally that he put the lives of other people at risk.
The big take away from this is that you can find yourself in a life-or-death situation without intentionally placing yourself into one for something as simple as a careless mistake.
Be armed, be trained, and have a plan.
