A man died Monday morning after he was shot while reportedly trying to break in to a Wilson home, police said.

Officers responding to a burglary in progress call in the 1900 block of Winoca Road at about 1:15 a.m. found a wounded man outside a home, police said.

The homeowner told police that he heard someone trying to kick in the door to his house, and he warned the intruder to stop before firing shots through the door.

We’ve covered numerous similar incidents in the past where a home owner is forced to deal with someone attempting to force their way into a home in the early hours of the morning, and in many (if not most) of those incidents, the home invader is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or a toxic cocktail of multiple mind-altering substances.

It will be interesting to see if the toxicology screen reveals the presence of drugs in this home intruder as well.
