A federal judge in Illinois has ordered the Chicago Police Department to stop using the Sig Sauer P320 handgun after the local police union complained that the department was taking too long in phasing out its use.
U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer granted Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7's request to get involved in an order earlier this week, stating that CPD officers who have access to a handgun that “meets appropriate standards should be required immediately to use that alternative weapon” in place of the P320.
Pallmeyer said city officials did “not fully answer” her questions about on-duty officers’ continued use of the Sig Sauer P320, a popular weapon with police officers and members of the military that has been the subject of dozens of complaints that it can fire without the trigger being pulled.
A 2023 investigation by The Trace and The Washington Post identified dozens of unintentional shootings involving the P320. Several law enforcement agencies banned the gun after officers suffered serious injuries, according to the news organizations.
Pallmeyer’s order came at the request of the police union, whose leaders had asked Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling to immediately ban the use of the gun, which was listed as the primary service weapon for 10% of CPD’s officers.
I do wonder, though, whether Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson will try to use the judge's order to demand a general ban on the sale of P320s, as he's trying to do with the sale of Glocks. In fact, given the coordinated campaigns we're seeing with groups like Everytown for Gun Safety and local officials like Johnson, Baltimore's Brandon Scott, and Seattle City Attorney Ann Davidson, who are all involved in litigation that seeks to halt the sales of Glock handguns throughout the entirety of their state, I'm kind of surprised we haven't already seen similar efforts targeting the Sig handgun.
When it filed its lawsuit against the WSCJTC back in June, Sig Saeur maintained that the P320 is "one of the most tested, proven, and chosen side arms in small arms history, [and] that as designed, the P320 cannot discharge without a trigger pull, and that multiple redundant safeties prevent this from occurring." The company is now offering a "voluntary upgrade" to customers, however, stating on its website:
"Through additional testing above and beyond standard American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/Sporting Arms & Ammunition Institute (SAAMI), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Department of Justice (DOJ), Massachusetts, California, and other global military and law enforcement protocols, we have confirmed that usually after multiple drops, at certain angles and conditions, a potential discharge of the firearm may result when dropped. Although it is a rare occurrence, with very specific conditions, SIG SAUER is offering an upgrade to all of its current P320 owners.
The gun control lobby and their political allies may be trying to build a stronger case against Sig than what the available evidence presents at the moment, but the P320 still seems like the next obvious target for the anti-gunners given their strategy of trying to enact piecemeal bans on particular pistols instead of prohibiting the entire category of handguns.
