Earlier this year a bill that would have allowed for lawful concealed carry on the campuses of Louisiana's colleges and universities was pulled from consideration by the bill's sponsor after several students who had signed up to testify in support bailed on him. I wrote at the time that I was disappointed Rep. Danny McCormick didn't pursue passage regardless, but added that I couldn't help but think that McCormick might also have received some pushback from his fellow lawmakers; enough that it was clear the legislation wasn't going to move this session.

If that really was the reason for the bill's early demise, legislators have good reason to now rethink their opposition. A freshman at Louisiana State University alleges that she was forced to perform oral sex on man who pulled a gun on her in dorm's study room, and 21-year-old Ronald White is now facing criminal charges related to the sexual assault.

Following the alleged assault, he told the victim to retrieve a paper towel. Instead, she went down to the building’s lobby and asked someone to contact campus police, according to the warrant.

When cops showed up, White allegedly ignored officers’ repeated commands to stop inside the lobby and sprinted out of the building — and was captured when police found him hiding underneath a car parked at a nearby intersection.

Cops allegedly found seven grams of marijuana on White, but no gun. The purported firearm had still not been recovered by the time detectives submitted the warrant Monday.

Following his arrest, White claimed the girl began touching him “voluntarily” and that the oral sex was consensual, documents show.

The alleged predator was tossed behind bars and charged with first-degree rape, resisting an officer, drug possession and carrying a firearm on school property over the weekend.

According to the New York Post, White was also arrested in October 2024 after he was accused of threatening to kill an on-campus fast food worker, though the paper says he was never prosecuted after the victim became non-cooperative with police.

It's worth noting that police have not yet found the firearm that White allegedly had in his possession, but it's also worth pointing out that this is the second time in two years that White's been accused of bringing a gun onto the LSU campus.

LSU is a "sensitive place" in name only. There are no metal detectors at every entrance to the campus, no armed guard stationed outside of dorms or classroom buildings, and no way for police to know whether someone is illegally carrying a gun unless they happen to see it or someone reports it to them. Someone with criminal intent can easily bring a firearm onto campus without fear of detection, but a student or staff member who does the same has to worry about facing criminal charges, expulsion, and the loss of a job if they do the same.

Louisiana already allows adults 18 and older to lawfully carry concealed firearms off campus without a permit (though, oddly, a resident still has to be 21 to obtain a concealed carry license), so why shouldn't they be able to carry on campus as well? If they're responsible enough to bear arms at a grocery store, movie theater, restaurant, or a public sidewalk, they're responsible enough to carry in a dorm, dining hall, or classroom too.

We don't know if the woman who was allegedly assaulted by White would have chosen to carry a pistol for self-defense if she was allowed to, but we do know that it's not an option for her or anyone else at LSU. That needs to change, and Rep. McCormick should reintroduce a campus carry bill next session and ask any colleagues reluctant to support it why they believe armed criminals should have the upper hand over innocent victims on college and university campuses.

Editor’s Note: President Trump and Republicans across the country are doing everything they can to protect our Second Amendment rights and right to self-defense.
