Two off-duty officers took a little work home with them this past week when they were forced to draw their weapons and confront home intruders.
In Redding, C.A., it was an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer who doled out a bit of instant justice Sunday night from the comfort of his own home.
The Redding Police Department says officers first went to a home Sunday after receiving a call about a prowler trying break into it through the back door. The officers didn’t find the suspect.
While officers were still in the area, a call was made from a nearby home owned by a CHP officer, reporting the shooting of an unidentified person trying to break into the house.
Paramedics transported the suspect to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Early Monday morning, a home intruder picked the wrong house to break into on North Fifth Avenue in Manville, N.J. When the homeowner, an off-duty police officer, discovered the man in his home, he took aim and shot him in the chest.
Authorities say the off-duty cop and responding officers began life-saving medical treatment on the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Tyreek Cook. He was then taken to a trauma center for emergency treatment and is in critical condition.
“It’s a little scary,” said Michael Herrera, a neighbor of the officer. “So you’ve got to wonder how you are going to protect your wife and kids.”
“Being an off-duty cop, what else is he going to do?” added another neighbor. “If I had a gun in my house, I’d do the same thing.”
Police believe Cook may be responsible for a series of burglaries in the area, both of homes and cars, but have charged him with third-degree burglary for Monday’s break-in as they investigate the other crimes.
Fair warning to criminals: if you break into a home, police officer’s or not, you should expect to be met with deadly force.
