What should concealed carry weapons permit holders do once they’ve received their license? Training requirements are minimal thresholds and Gun Owners Radio released a guide to help new carriers grow.

In states like California where there’s training requirements, onerous background checks, sometimes illegal “personality tests,” and possibly excessive fees, new firearm carriers might sigh a big sigh of relief once they’ve been credentialed. Getting that license and meeting the minimum requirements are only the beginning when it comes to being responsibly armed. Gun Owners Radio explains “What Every California CCW Holder Needs to Know Next” in their new “Beyond the Permit” guide.

“What comes after the permit is where most CCW holders make mistakes—bad gear choices, legal blind spots, and assumptions that can get you hurt or jammed up in court,” the guide’s landing page explains. “That’s why we created ‘Beyond the Permit: The Responsible CCW Holder’s Guide.’”

What’s the guide offer?

“No fluff. No tacticool nonsense. Just practical guidance for people who actually carry,” the landing page further notes. “We’re offering this guide free to CCW holders who want to stay informed, prepared, and legally protected.”

“Beyond the Permit” is an 11-page, easy to digest and understand roadmap of things to consider once you’ve become a new carrier. The guide has eight areas of focus, each with recommendations, and many with additional resources to check out.

Within the pages, readers will find easy-to-understand explanations and high quality images — not a text bogged down with jargon. It’s obvious that the team at Gun Owners Radio put some time into putting together the guide. Is it completely comprehensive covering all topics? No. Nor do the authors tout that “Beyond the Permit” would cover everything — but rather, point new carriers in a few directions to follow to get them started.

“You made the decision to get your concealed carry permit (CCW),” the introduction to the guide says. “You completed the application, you submitted your identification, you passed the extensive background check, you paid the fees, you took the class, and you passed the test.

“You are now permitted to defend your life outside your home by carrying the most effective self-defense tool ever invented. You are now part of a group of people who commit fewer crimes than the general population and subgroups like law enforcement. You are a CCW holder.”

“Congratulations!” the guide continues. “Thank you for making this important decision grounded in responsibility.”

The eight areas that the guide offers insight into are:

  • Holster recommendations
  • Belt recommendations
  • Sights recommendations
  • Flashlight recommendations
  • Car safe recommendations
  • Defensive ammunition
  • Instructor recommendations
  • Insurance recommendations

What’s great about the guide is that it addresses something that more dogmatic instructors won’t necessarily: “Everyone’s situation and needs are different, but here are the most common and important things people need after they get their CCW.” It’s about the individual’s needs. Gun Owners Radio’s more libertarian approach to trying to meet people’s needs is part of the refreshing Gun Culture 2.0 mentality.

While “Beyond the Permit” is geared towards the California gun owner, much of the content is universal. The concepts and ideas expressed are for everyone. Will their instructor recommendations serve people outside the San Diego area? No. But their recommendations on everything else are more than applicable wherever you live.

Michael Schwartz is the main host and man behind Gun Owners Radio and the executive director of the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC. Schwartz told Bearing Arms that he was excited about rolling this out to help new license holders.

“It's easy to get your California CCW now and in San Diego alone, hundreds of new people each month are becoming permit holders for the first time,” Schwartz said. “Obtaining a CCW isn't the end of the journey, it's just the beginning. We wanted to help people take their next steps.”

“Beyond the Permit” published by the folks at Gun Owners Radio is a free resource that they put together. If you’re a new carrier, or thinking of becoming a new carrier, taking a look at this guide might be helpful. Are you a veteran gun owner and user? Use “Beyond the Permit” as a brush up on what you already know, and share it with anyone in your life who’s new to exercising their Second Amendment right.
