New York is always listed among the most anti-gun states in the nation and for good reason. The state’s heavily influenced by the politics of the Big Apple, which skews the entire state leftward. That means it’s far more likely to be dominated by gun control advocates than by ordinary Americans who are proud of their Second Amendment heritage.

However, it’s also long been said that if you leave the urban confines in New York, you’ll find plenty of red state ideals being quite popular. That includes the right to keep and bear arms.

In Wyoming County, the Board of Supervisors has made their opinions of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s war against the Second Amendment known.

As a rural area, Wyoming County has its share of hunters and firearms enthusiasts.

The NY SAFE Act gun control law met opposition from a wide swath of area residents when it was approved six years ago and Second Amendment rights continue to be a concern for them, which was part of why the county’s Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a resolution titled “Opposing Infringements on the Rights of Legitimate Firearm Owners.”

The resolution notes that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms for the defense of life, liberty and property is regarded as an inalienable right of the people of Wyoming County.”

It also notes numerous bills in the state legislature it says would violate a citizen’s rights to free speech, personal security, the right to life liberty and property, due process and other factors under the guise of gun control. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday vowed to make the state’s firearms laws — among the nation’s strongest — even stronger.

“Be it resolved that the Wyoming County Board of Supervisors stands in strong opposition to any and all legislation that would intentionally violate the rights of lawful citizens that are guaranteed in the Constitution, the supreme cause of the land,” the resolution reads.

Copies are being distributed to state and federal lawmakers representing the good people of Wyoming County.

This is awesome. It warms the cynical cockles of my heart.

Unfortunately, I don’t see it accomplishing much of anything beyond being a grand gesture. The Board didn’t turn the county into a sanctuary county or anything of the sort (and I’m not saying they necessarily should, but I’m not saying they shouldn’t either). It didn’t do anything except make its opinions on the matter very, very clear.

However, that’s still important.

We currently live in a world where anti-gun forces are trying to make it socially unacceptable to support the Second Amendment. It’s easy to feel isolated when you’re the only one you know who supports it. It becomes easy to start shifting your opinions so that you won’t feel that isolation. Knowing you’re not alone is huge. It helps you dig a little deeper, to keep the fortitude needed to hold your ground.

But at the end of the day, it’s New York. Don’t expect this to change laws or sway people like Cuomo in any way. The ramifications of this are what they are. Let’s not get too excited.

A little excitement, though, is completely warranted. Good on the county supervisors up in Wyoming County.
