Rep. Eric “Nuke ’em All” Swalwell lives in a fantasy world. He seems to think that nuclear weapons are a viable alternative to use when people decide they don’t want to comply with gun control schemes. He also apparently thinks he has a shot at being president of the United States despite polling somewhere in the neighborhood of a Christmas tree that’s been left up way too long.

His latest? He thinks Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell won’t be in power after 2020.

Rep. Eric Swalwell said he is confident Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will not be in power to stop gun control bills from being brought to the Senate floor after the 2020 election.

I used to think that, too, until I saw the Parkland generation and the Moms Demand Action and the Giffords Group and the March for Our Lives, go to the ballot box this last election and they beat 17 candidates NRA-endorsed members of Congress,” the presidential candidate said.

“And so the message I take away from that is we should not be afraid to address this issue and negotiate up. So let’s beat Mitch McConnell and let’s talk about gun safety in Kentucky and Arizona and Maine and all these other states, because the moms are with us. And so we have a lot of momentum to seize right now. So I’m not even accepting the premise that Mitch McConnell is going to be there,” he said.

Of course, Swalwell forgets that historically, Democrats should have done better in the midterms than they did. Part of why they didn’t was probably because of their full-court press on guns rather than focusing on issues voters gave a damn about.

However, he’s deluded if he thinks Sen. McConnell is out after 2020.

For one thing, Kentucky went for Trump by almost 63 percent. Clinton was trounced there, and there’s no reason to believe the state has become less conservative. McConnell is undoubtedly going to win reelection.

Of course, Rep. Swalwell may believe Sen. McConnell will win, but that won’t be Senate Majority Leader. That would be a slightly more plausible scenario, but not a particularly likely one.

Support for Democrats and gun control centers around the Northeast and West Coast regions, but that leaves a whole lot of places where guns are a way of life. They’re not likely to support anti-gun senators.

That’s going to lay election results up to a handful of battleground states, and let’s be honest here, Swalwell has no clue how any of this is going to shake out. He’s deluded himself into thinking that there’s some great gun control movement coming and, as such, everything he says should be taken with a grain of salt, especially as he’s running for president with poll numbers only a hair better than a worn-out plush turd.

That said, it’s also important we keep an eye on those battleground states. Sen. McConnell may not be at risk, but others might. It’s time to dig in and get ready for war (metaphorically, in this case).
