Gun Control Group Claims Executive Order On Voting About Saving Lives

One of the knocks many people have had on the NRA in recent years has been their insistence that the gun-rights group was focusing too much on politics outside of their focus. In other words, the NRA was really just about backing Republican interests. Sure, some of that was on NRATV, which had a lot of hours to fill and only so much gun news with which to fill it all, but that didn’t matter.

Yet as we saw in the last election cycle, gun control groups weren’t above pushing Democratic issues that had nothing to do with guns when they found it convenient. They paid for a number of attack ads that blasted GOP candidates that never even mentioned firearms.

And, it seems, they’re still willing to push non-gun-related policies.

President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Sunday aimed at expanding voting rights. It’s the Biden administration’s latest move to expand voting rights as they push the Senate to pass H.R. 1, the House Democrats’ bill to radically transform America’s election system, including prohibiting voter ID laws and mandating taxpayers fund political campaigns.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, one of the leading gun control groups in the nation, the executive order is also a way to address the “gun violence” problem.

“The truth is… if we had a functioning democracy that reflected the will of the people, we would have sensible gun laws that protected our communities. With this executive action, Biden is using his executive power to make our democracy one where all citizens are able to make their voices heard, unhindered. This is vital action in our effort to save lives from gun violence, and it can’t be the last,”the group said in an email to supporters.

So, I give them credit for at least trying to tie the voting rights executive order to gun control, but holy crap that’s a leap worthy of inclusion in the Olympic games.

Seriously.

First, our nation is founded as a republic, not a democracy, and for a good reason. A democracy is mob rule with a pretty-sounding name. If 90 percent of the people voted to herd LGBT Americans into concentration camps, it would be democracy in action. It would also be tyrannical to an extreme.

Tyranny doesn’t require a single dictator to infringe on people’s civil liberties. A mob can do it just as well.

The idea behind our system is to preserve rights even in the face of the majority’s will. That goes for anything, from free speech and freedom of religion to our right to keep and bear arms.

Frankly, I don’t want a “functioning democracy” where Everytown or groups like it can run roughshod over my rights simply because doing so is popular. Destroying people’s rights doesn’t become good simply because the majority approves of it. The majority in the Deep South approved of segregation back in the day. Did that make it better? A whole lot of people sided with FDR over herding Japanese-Americans into internment camps during World War II. Does that make it better?

What Everytown really wants, and why they’re backing this executive order, is a world where a manipulated mob can take away your guns regardless of what the Constitution of the United States has to say about it. They don’t actually care if the process makes election fraud easier just so long as they can get your guns.

Plain and simple.
