With violent crime being a significant concern, people are looking at candidates who promise to do something about it. For many Democrats, that means gun control.
Of course, the fact that the media never pushes back on where guns in criminal hands actually come from--most are stolen, for the record--just enables this sort of nonsense.
As does the fact that many in the media just diligently report literally anything that might help an anti-gun candidate. Take this report from Florida. It seems a group has endorsed a candidate's gun control agenda.
A national police group is making clear that it has Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell’s back in a critical U.S. Senate race.
The Police Leaders for Community Safety endorsed the Miami Democrat’s challenge to U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, a Naples Republican.
“Debbie Mucarsel-Powell stands out as a strong advocate for the safety of our communities,” said Sue Riseling, Chair of Police Leaders for Community Safety. “Her support for policies that enhance policing, address violent crime and promote community safety aligns with our mission of fostering secure environments for all Americans.”
While it bills itself as a nonpartisan advocacy group, the Police Leaders for Community Safety, which formed in June, has come out in favor of gun control measures and policies aimed at curbing gun violence. It was launched by more than 50 police leaders
The organization endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and stressed the need for diverse leadership in charge of public safety nationwide. It also supported several executive orders from President Joe Biden aimed at reducing gun violence.
“These Executive Orders are important and impactful steps that will help combat the scourge of gun violence in our communities,” said Rick Myers, Board Vice Chair of Police Leaders for Community Safety.
Now, the term "police leaders" suggests that these are law enforcement officers holding senior positions within their departments.
However, between the advisory board and the board of directors, one is kind of hard-pressed to find that many currently holding a law enforcement job. Some do, but most are "retired" police chiefs of various departments or "retired" sheriffs.
In other words, they're unemployed--and many chiefs and sheriffs bill themselves as "retired" when, in actuality, they were fired and just opted to not look for a new gig.
Additionally, many of them were or currently are chiefs of university police departments.
Now, what we need to understand is that police chiefs often are required to reflect the politics of their bosses. We all know what the typical campus environment is, so there being this many police chiefs from universities is hardly surprising.
Further, this organization seems tailor-made for Democrats, with only three guiding issues: Gun control, police reform, and what one might describe as "defending democracy" as Democrats like to frame it.
In other words, this isn't a group of police chiefs and sheriffs who are looking to improve our communities. This is a Democrat-leaning PAC that's using that status to try and hide the fact that they're really just a partisan organization that is parroting progressive talking points.
And any media outlet that clicked the link would have been able to determine that with only a quick scan of the available information.
[Editor's note - Police Leaders for Community Safety's CEO and President is longtime gun control activist Gail Hoffman, who was once the legislative director for Handgun Control, Inc (now Brady), so yeah, I'd say it's fair to call this just another bit of anti-gun astroturfing - Cam]
