Note to DOJ: If Anti-Gunners are Siding with You on NFA Registration, You're Not the Good Guys

You can tell a lot about someone by the company they keep.

While there's something to be said for going into bad places and reaching out to troubled people, even the most dedicated spend their time with people who are more reflective of who they are as a person than the criminals and others they try to help.

That's the company they keep.

The Department of Justice, which President Donald Trump charged with restoring our Second Amendment rights, has been defending registration of NFA items that are no longer taxed, like suppressors and short-barreled firearms. In this, the company they're keeping should serve as a warning to Attorney General Pam Bondi that this is not the road she should be taking.

“Everytown, Giffords, & Brady just joined forces with @AGPamBondi & @theJusticeDept  to DEFEND national gun registration & fight against our Big Beautiful Lawsuit,” Gun Owners of America posted on X along with a screenshot of an amicus brief.

The GOA-backed case is Silencer Shop Foundation et al. v. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives et al., a complaint filed in the United States District Court for the Norther District of Texas, asking the court  to: “Declare that the NFA’s registration and transfer requirements pertaining to untaxed firearms exceed Congress’s enumerated powers; [and to] “Enjoin Defendants … from implementing, enforcing, or otherwise acting under the authority of the NFA with respect to untaxed firearms…”

Basically, now that there’s no tax on them, there’s no point nor lawful power to require their registration. That’s apparently obvious to all Second Amendment supporters except the Justice Department under Pam Bondi, and a blatant reneging of her pledge for “Department of Justice to use its full might to protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.”

DOJ’s handling of Second Amendment matters can best be described as bipolar, a point made here before on Firearms News.

I've defended the DOJ to some degree for still doing more than we've ever seen from the department in the past. That cannot be ignored, nor am I interested in doing so.

But here, they're standing with the very people who care nothing at all about gun rights and instead back every infringement on that right they come across.

The company they're keeping on this case and several others should serve as a warning to Bondi that she's not exactly living up to the expectations set by the president himself. If groups like Giffords, Brady, and Everytown are siding with you, how can you reasonably expect the Second Amendment community to believe that you actually side with them?

It's like your local narcotics unit partnering with the local fentanyl dealers. It makes absolutely no sense at all.

The Department of Justice, especially this one, is supposed to stand up for the rights of all Americans. Being forced to register a device that was only supposed to be registered to verify the tax was paid, even after the tax was abolished, isn't standing up for our rights.

To Attorney General Bondi, allow me to just ask you this: If anti-gunners are siding with you, how can you pretend to remotely respect the Second Amendment at all?

I won't hold my breath waiting for an answer.
