California Dreaming of Drugs, Guns, and Pipe Bombs

Tom Knighton

The state of California is the epicenter of most bad ideas in the United States. From Valley Girls to Goat Yoga, from extreme diets to various gun control policies, if it's a terrible idea, there's a good chance it came from California. It's just that last example that really causes issues everywhere else, since it's inflicted on law-abiding folks as opposed to a choice on someone else's part.

But hey, at least it works, right?

Well, no.

In fact, it works so well that a street in Santa Cruz County had to be shut down because of an alleged bad guy with the trifecta of illegal items.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said deputies found a loaded gun, suspected narcotics and a pipe bomb during a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon that prompted a road closure on Freedom Boulevard.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies conducted a traffic stop around 4 p.m. near the 2600 block of Freedom Boulevard. After one of the agency’s K9s alerted on the vehicle, deputies searched it.

...

During the search, deputies found a loaded firearm, suspected narcotics and a pipe bomb, according to the sheriff’s office.

Apparently, the suspect tried to run but was unsuccessful.

There aren't any specifics on either the gun or the suspected narcotics, but the pipe bomb seems to be pretty firm. I guess that means California needs to step up its pipe bomb control efforts, don't you think?

Nah, me neither, but it sure as hell is funny.

Look, if this guy had a pipe bomb and drugs, is it really surprising that he knew how to get a gun as well? I seriously doubt he got it lawfully, considering everything else he was into. What he was doing with any of it is a matter of personal speculation, but I'm pretty sure whatever my wild imagination comes up with will be infinitely cooler than the truth. Not that it matters, though, because this is what they found, and they found it all in gun-controlled California.

And, one would think, pipe bomb-controlled California.

The truth of the matter is, though, that if someone is determined to engage in criminality, and they want a gun or some explosive device, there's not a whole hell of a lot you're going to manage to do to stop them from getting any of it. Again, he had a bomb. I can't lawfully obtain a bomb without jumping through a bunch of hoops with the NFA, and I probably still won't be able to get one when all is said and done, but some twerp who got pulled over in Santa Cruz County allegedly had that.

Since I doubt he had a prescription for the alleged drugs, either, none of this is surprising. If the gun turns out to be stolen or privately made, despite the laws against obtaining a firearm in either way, then that's just the icing on the cake.

But rather than learn from this, what California will continue to do is create more terrible ideas they can export to the rest of the country, and while some will be on par with goat yoga, far too many of them will be far worse.
