I've written before about losing a friend in a mass shooting in Seattle. Every report of a mass shooting sends me right back to the moment I learned Kim was gone, and while I am still pro-gun and always will be, it's still something I haven't really gotten past, even 14 years later. And the report of another mass killing in the city isn't likely to help.
It seems that three people were killed in a shooting during a food festival.
Three people were killed and at least four others, including a child, were injured in a shooting Sunday evening at a Seattle food festival, a block from the city’s iconic Space Needle, authorities said.
Authorities responded to reports of a shooting just after 6 p.m. at the Seattle Center, which was hosting the annual Bite of Seattle, a three-day festival with thousands expected in attendance.
Two people were declared dead at the scene and four others, the youngest of which was 2-years-old, were transported to Harborview Medical Center, the fire department said in a statement. Another person later showed up at another hospital with a gunshot wound, officials said.
In a press briefing late Sunday, Seattle Police Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis said one of the victims hospitalized had later died.
Davis said one suspect has been taken into custody and authorities are still searching for one person believed to be involved. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson said earlier two people were in custody, but later updated her statement.
Two people were believed to be shooting at each other, Davis said, adding an investigation is ongoing and “there is no outstanding threat to the community.” It’s unknown what prompted the shooting.
In other words, we can say it's a mass killing, depending on your definition, but it wasn't a deranged madman. Instead, it sounds like two people who hated each other and had absolutely no respect for the human life around them.
Over at our sister site, Townhall, Matt Vespa reported that five people were injured in total, according to authorities.
While I'd rather not be that guy, we know the anti-gun side doesn't pause to consider before they jump on calls for gun control, so I'm obligated to point out that Washington state has become one of the most anti-gun states in the nation. Everytown grades them very highly for their gun control laws, even as violent crime hasn't responded as predicted. That's particularly bad since it's going down everywhere else.
In this case, we don't know the specifics, but based on what we do know, I suspect we'll find these guns weren't legally acquired in the first place, are possibly banned under Washington state law, as it is, and that the gun laws did nothing to protect these people.
That last bit isn't really a suspicion since the evidence of failure is as clear as day.
My thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of the deceased, with the injured and their families, and everyone who has been impacted by this horrific event. At some point, we really have to sit down and start talking about what makes these people think they can do things like this. We need to discuss why this kind of thing happens, and stop trying to blame guns for it.
Otherwise, do you know what will happen?
