I love privately made firearms, regardless of how someone goes about making them. I think they should be legal in every state and people should be free to experiment with whatever they want. Once people can roll their own without concern, we might start seeing some really interesting innovations. Beer, for example, got really good after it was deregulated and home brewers could concoct their own stuff and, if it was good, become an actual brewer. There's no reason to believe guns would be any different.
But that doesn't mean every homemade gun is glorious.
Sometimes, they're just gloriously horrifying, like this rifle from California.
Authorities in southwest Riverside County recently seized a homemade .50-caliber rifle capable of firing Browning Machine Gun rounds, the City of Menifee Police Department said Tuesday.
The gun was fully functional and “lacked several important safety components” usually found in manufactured guns, making the rifle especially hazardous, according to police.
“Due to the unusual construction and potential danger of the weapon, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s Hazardous Device Team responded to assist our personnel in safely examining and clearing the firearm,” Menifee PD said.
I mean, look at this thing:
And since it apparently lacks standard safety features — actual safety features, mind you, not the things California calls "safety features" but are really designed to make the gun as useless as possible — this could arguably be considered an explosive device in the making. Especially if you try to shoot some janky ammo out of it like what nearly killed Kentucky Ballistics a few years back.
Seriously, this is some janky stuff.
It should be noted that the individual who was in possession of this...item was a prohibited person. Despite both that, the state's ban on "ghost guns," and its ban on .50 BMG firearms, this thing exists. It's right there, looking for all the world like a weapon rejected from a Fallout game, and breaking all three of those supposedly working gun control laws.
We live in a world where skills are easy to acquire. It's kind of a glorious time, all things considered, and part of it is because we can just build things we want. A quick Google search and you see how to do this sort of thing. Yeah, that's right, YouTube won't let you post it, but you can still find it all on Google, which is owned by YouTube. Tells you a lot.
Anyway, my point is that no law can stop you from acquiring the skills needed to make a thing like this. It means that no amount of gun control will disarm the population, no matter how much you try to claim otherwise. What's more, this is a good thing, because as we've seen, every doom-and-gloom prediction of the anti-gunners has failed to materialize. That at least suggests that guns in private hands is good for our society. If we can build them, we can always resist tyranny. It's just that simple.
Even if we're talking about building the jankiest .50 caliber rifle I've ever seen in my life, and one that I wouldn't shoot for all the money in the world.
Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their extreme gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
