How quickly many forgot the Nice, France, truck attack that left more than 80 people dead. Instead, American anti-gunners act like if you take all the guns away, then you won't have mass casualty attacks. I mean, it happened, but it would never happen again or something.
An alleged drunk driver in California just shattered that delusion.
See, it started with a bike ride. I'll joke about cyclists being insufferable or something, but mostly because I have friends who are cyclists, and it's funny to bust their balls. Even if they're women who don't have them. They're still people, and they enjoy what they enjoy, and sometimes that includes getting a lot of people together for a ride.
Makes sense, especially since drafting works on a bike, and more people means more drafting opportunities.
Then, the nightmare began.
Two bicyclists were killed and another seriously hurt after a suspected drunk driver plowed into a Halloween group ride in Montclair and then fled, police said.
About 30 riders were heading east on Kingsley Street near Tudor Avenue around 10:39 p.m. Saturday when a westbound car slammed into several of them, according to the Montclair Police Department.
Witnesses told officers the riders were taking part in a self-coordinated Halloween ride that was not sponsored, organized or affiliated with the city.
One cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene minutes later. A woman rushed to the hospital died early Sunday. And a third rider suffered major injuries and is in a stable condition. The first victim was declared dead at 10:44 p.m., just five minutes after the crash. The second deceased died at the hospital at about 1:19 a.m.
A fourth cyclist suffered a minor gash to the head but refused further medical treatment against medical advice, police said.
Police have not released the names of the victims.
The driver was arrested for suspected DUI, felony hit-and-run, and gross vehicular manslaughter.
Understand something, though. Two people are dead, two more injured, and this was someone who simply shouldn't have been behind the wheel (allegedly). This wasn't some intentional act. It was someone who appears to have had too much to drink, hit the riders, and probably panicked and tried to run, because people who are drunk make fantastic decisions like that.
Now think of what he could have done if he'd wanted to hurt people.
And don't pretend it can't happen here. It already has. That incident killed eight people with a truck the dude rented from a Home Depot.
It happened in the early hours of 2025, when 14 people were killed by a guy with a truck. Nearly 60 were injured.
See, the problem with these incidents, from the anti-gun point of view, is that they betray the claim that if you take the guns away, you'll take away people's ability to carry out these kinds of deadly attacks. That's absolute nonsense. This wasn't even intentional, and it killed two people. Do you really think that no would-be mass killer is going to look at these incidents and think, "Nah. Not my style," and suddenly just slink off and do nothing?
That's not how it'll work, and anyone with a lick of sense knows it.
Take away the guns, and you take away people's ability to fight back. Take away the guns and you make millions of Americans victims when they didn't have to be. You won't stop the terrorists. Hell, we can't even stop the drunk drivers. How are we going to stop terrorists and malcontents intending to slaughter as many innocent people as possible?
No, it's well past time to stop this crap and recognize that we don't have a gun problem. We have a problem with evil. That's what we need to address.
