Who’s Talking With the White House?

There are five main national Second Amendment advocacy groups in the United States. All of them and/or their sister organizations have indicated they’re in communications with the Trump Administration.

While this is not a completely exhaustive list, it’s safe to say there are five big national Second Amendment advocacy groups in the U.S. Those groups each have sister organizations and in some cases multiple offshoots — even some have political action committees. After talking to representatives and/or top leaders of each organization, the clear message is: yes, they’re all communicating with the White House.

The groups and their sister organizations consist of: Firearms Policy Coalition and FPC Action Foundation, Gun Owners of America and Gun Owners Foundation, National Association for Gun Rights and National Foundation for Gun Rights (and a PAC and super PAC), the National Rifle Association and their litigation/lobby branch the NRA Institute for Legislative Action (as well as a host of other sister organizations), and the Second Amendment Foundation and Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Whatever is or is not going on within the Trump Administration, the White House, the Department of Justice, and so on, does so exclusive of this coverage. While things may appear one way or the other — and yeah, there’s been some interesting filings, sound bites, and stances from the Administration — that’s not to say that the Second Amendment groups aren’t working towards reclaiming liberties that have been stolen.

The groups are working for the Second Amendment.

Firearms Policy Coalition President Brandon Combs, when asked if FPC is in talks with the White House, said, “Yes.” FPC is a 501(c)(4) associated with launching aggressive litigation on both a state and federal level, as well as being known for their spicy social media posts.

“We definitely have been in touch with the White House since, well, actually going back into the transition,” Combs said during a Sept. 2025 interview. “I think it's been encouraging how open they've been to having conversations, productive conversations.”

Combs admits that FPC and the Administration don’t always agree on everything, but he said they’ve done a “notably improved job” of hearing out his organization. He said that there’s been a big difference between the first Trump Administration and the current one in regards to getting things done.

“We have open lines of communication into different parts of the administration, from the White House, into agencies, and so we'll certainly do our best to support positive engagement with all of them — certainly active engagement with all of them,” Combs explained. “Now, as far as part of the plan, I think it's hard to make plans when you're talking about dialog, right? That takes two parties and that takes two people. So I can't speak for the other side — I can't speak for the Trump administration, and I wouldn't dare to, but I'll just say that we certainly have every intention of maintaining that open line of communication and [are] happy to do it.”

When Erich Pratt, the senior vice president of Gun Owners of America, opened up during a mid-2025 interview about his group’s dealing with the White House, he was optimistic. Gun Owners of America is a 501(c)(4) lobby group and grassroots advocacy organization.

“It’s been an exciting huge improvement from Trump 1.0 during the first administration,” Pratt said about dealing with the government. “We’ve had conversations with the administration at all levels, from our own trips down to Mar-a-Lago to working with people at DOJ and the ATF.”

Pratt said that a lot of good things had been happening as far as gaining ground for the Second Amendment. He listed one of the group’s accomplishments as having the Department of Justice step up and investigate states and/or local municipalities on how they might be infringing on the Second Amendment.

“The first case that they announced that they’re examining is a case that GOA is involved in, the one dealing with the LA Sheriffs holding up issuing permits,” Pratt said. “They were taking up to two years and it was costing people 1000s of dollars.”

Other things that Pratt commended the Trump Administration on ameliorating were their reversal on things like forced reset triggers, cutting anti gun funding to the National Institute of Health, working towards restoring the rights of non-violent felons, and taking the correct position on the Biden Era pistol brace ban.

Taylor Rhodes, the communications director for National Association for Gun Rights said during the 2025 interview that “I can't say all that much about it, but I will say we have been in contact with the White House.” NAGR is a 501(c)(4) lobby organization that was founded in 2000. NAGR’s sister organization, the National Foundation for Gun Rights, has been getting more and more involved in litigation in the post-Bruen timeframe.

“Our former chairman Dave Warrington, is now the chief White House counsel, which is huge,” Rhodes said about his organization’s relationship with the Trump Administration. “Also, Harmeet Dhillon, who ran the law firm that we were running many of our lawsuits through – the Rare Breed Trigger one being the flagship — is actually assistant attorney general now. We do have pathways into the White House and we're hoping that this presidential term turns out to be a good one.”

“When the presidency changed from Democrat to Republican, we launched our program for freedom, which we uniquely coined Make America Armed Again,” Rhodes added. “This is a multi-point plan to take back the rights that the Obama Administration and even past Republican administrations have pushed on us.”

The National Rifle Association has been in the spotlight over the last few years. From Board of Director election news, to the Wayne scandals, and now the National Rifle Association v. NRA Foundation lawsuit, there’s been no lack of things going on. None of that has stopped the Association from continuing to fulfill their mission of supporting the Second Amendment.

NRA Institute for Legislative Action Executive Director John Commerford talked enthusiastically about working with the Trump Administration. During our Sept. 2025 interview he said that they “stay in regular contact with leadership in Washington, D.C., including the White House.”

Commerford stressed that regardless how people feel about President Trump, he’s the most pro gun president we’ve seen. While NRA-ILA’s head was complementary in talking about the current administration, he did warn that gun owners can’t rest on laurels — the midterm elections are right around the corner.

He said that President Trump has “put cabinet officials in that support the Second Amendment,” something that was apparent after the first year of President Trump's second term.

“It's our job, and it's every gun owner's job to get out there in the polls this November … and make sure we protect those pro gun majorities in the House and Senate,” Commerford said. “Looking at the Senate alone, we need to be able to protect the ability of President Trump to nominate the judges and justices that he wants to nominate. We can help shape the American judiciary in the eyes of freedom for the rest of our generation, and most importantly, for the generations to come.”

Alan Gottlieb is the founder of the Second Amendment Foundation and the chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. (Both Cam and I serve as unpaid volunteer directors on CCRKBA’s board.) Gottlieb touched on CCRKBA’s lines of communication with the Trump Administration.

The week that then President-elect Trump was elected as the 47th President of the United States, Gottlieb traveled to Mar-a-Lago. On the Nov. 10, 2024 broadcast of Mark Walters’ Armed American Radio, Gottlibed told Walters that he should “let [his] listeners know that I will be at Mar-a-Lago, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and I'll be pushing our agenda … and we now have input and say back at the White House.”

During our Aug. 2025 interview Gottlieb noted that CCRKBA would be “working very closely with the Trump administration on [the] national — federal level.” Gottlieb further said that “a lot of the pro gun things that the Trump Administration has done to support gun rights, we've had a direct hand in.”

“Obviously, we don't like to get into details talking about who we're working with and how we're accomplishing it, but it's been really great,” Gottlieb added.

Advocates, activists, and Second Amendment supporters can gauge and critique how well or not well things are going under the Trump Administration. What can’t be said is that the advocacy groups that work for the Second Amendment and gun owners across the country aren’t talking with the White House. What further ground gun owners will gain as we navigate into 2026, hard telling. There have been plenty of wins, some losses, and certainly a few flags on the play.

What can be said — though, is that Bearing Arms will be here every step of the way to offer hard news, analysis, and commentary on everything Second Amendment in the U.S. as Americans navigate regaining their fundamental rights.
