Writer is Right that Gun Control is a Distant 'Hope' But Gets So Much Else Wrong

One of the issues we run into here as writers for Bearing Arms is the fact that over a long enough period of time, we end up repeating ourselves an awful lot. There are only so many arguments in favor of gun control and we've had to counter each and every one of them on a regular basis. So, we end up saying the same things in response to the same old tired arguments from the anti-gun crowd.

It gets repetitive because, well, it's repetitive.

But if we don't do it--and not just us here at Bearing Arms but everyone in the Second Amendment community--then the anti-gun voices will continue their own repetitive rhetoric until people believe them. That's really troubling since so much of it is downright laughable.

I'm talking about stuff like this:

No, we’re not the wild, wild West, although it certainly looks like it much of the time.

Shootings in this country are at an all-time high, even on movie sets where prop pistols kill people.

The attempt to assassinate former president Donald Trump is the most recent example of guns gone wild in America, where weapon access is easy and protection of victims is limited. People are easy to gun down, even past presidents.

We're just three paragraphs in and the stupid is starting to burn.

First, shootings in this country aren't at an all-time high. The homicide rate has been significantly higher in the past and it's trending downward from a spike that came out of nowhere in 2020--this despite absolutely no loosing of gun control laws as a general thing. If gun access is the problem, then why did no real change in gun laws result in a massive surge?

Or could it have been an issue with people?

Never mind that the "prop pistols" are just guns used in movies in many cases, meaning they're perfectly functioning firearms. The fact that a round was put into one of them is a failure of safety protocols, not the guns themselves. Besides, does anyone thing Hollywood wouldn't get an exemption for any gun control law we care to name? After all, they can still get any full-auto firearm they want while we peasants can't.

Then we have the attempt on Trump's life.

The shooter stole his gun and even if AR-15s had been banned, he could have stolen literally any other rifle and committed the same horrific act. It's even feasible that he might have succeeded if he had as bolt-actions are generally more accurate than semi-autos.

Moving on...

Let’s look at some metrics.

In 2023, Gun Violence Archive says there were over 40,000 firearm deaths and some 650 mass shootings in the U.S. Those attributed to gangs is uncertain as is the number of killings by undocumented migrants.

Oh, now I see the problem. You're trusting Gun Violence Archive.

First, if you're quoting all-time highs, keep in mind that the GVA hasn't been around all that long. What they call an all-time high bears absolutely no relationship to actual history when we saw greater highs in the 1980s and '90s. That doesn't even touch the high murder rates prior to the mid-1930s.

However, the author does get some things right. He correctly notes that gun control isn't likely to happen and he's not wrong about why.

What about recovering those guns? Take them out of circulation. Force people to turn them in. That won’t work. Of those who own firearms, many are hunters. A good friend and former Wisconsin Supreme Court justice is an avid hunter who would be loath to give up his rifles. And I worry that a neighbor, also a hunter and a big-time churchgoer, might take drastic steps if someone tried to take away his firearms. People would rather do battle than surrender their weapons.

You're damn right.

Look, no one in their right mind wants a civil war. If we have another one, it won't be neat little divisions on the map based on geography, where uniformed armies uphold the laws of war and shoot at each other while standing in nice little rows.

It'll be brutal, ugly, and there won't be any coming back from it. The America we know today will be dead and gone, with something else replacing it.

But if it comes to that versus giving up our guns, a lot of gun owners would rather take their chances with war. They might still die, but they'll die on their feet rather than risk living on their knees.

Gun control isn't coming, but that's OK. After all, the only reason most people think there's an issue of unprecedented levels is because jokers like this actually believe the propaganda.
