Those Canadian Gun Control Laws Are Just Swell...

Canada has never been particularly pro-gun, though there was a time when they could have some weapons that we can't without special permissions. Their government, for example, never decided to put an arbitrary limit on how short your rifle barrel could be, which is why a friend of mine had a 14.5 inch barrel on an AR-15.

Of course, now we have AR-15s and they're losing theirs, so I guess we still came out ahead.

In recent years, America's Hat has been on a pronounced anti-gun tear, stripping weapons from their citizens left and right and nothing seems likely to stop them.

But hey, if it gets guns out of the hands of bad guys, it's worth it, right?

Right?

OK, it's not because even if Canada doesn't recognize it, gun rights are human rights.

Then there's the fact that those laws are working just great.

Four men from Toronto are each facing several firearms-related charges after police raided an address in the city’s east end earlier this week.

On Monday, members of the 55 Division’s Major Crime Unit along with the Emergency Task Force executed a Criminal Code search warrant near Main Street and Danforth Avenue.

Police said at that time they located a loaded handgun, a replica handgun, a replica sub-machine gun, and firearm ammunition.

Replica firearms are often used by criminals in Europe where they convert them to fire live ammunition, which seems to also be happening in Canada.

See, the problem with gun control is that it controls the wrong people, at least compared to its stated purpose.

The goal, as sold to the voting public, is that measures are needed so as to prevent the wrong element from getting firearms and using them to create havoc in our communities. If enough people are willing to give up their right to have guns--and that isn't as difficult as it should be--then you end up with guns being taken from law-abiding citizens in hopes that the criminals will eventually be disarmed.

Criminals, however, tend not to go along with this.

They might lose a source of firearms, but if they want guns badly enough, someone will figure out a way to create a supply to meet that demand.

Between 3D printers and replica firearms, to say nothing of Mr. Luty's design, there is always a way to bypass restrictions that we're told are essential in disarming criminals.

It's a story we've seen play out time and time again all across the world. Gun restrictions well in excess of what we have here exist in every nation on the planet. These are the same restrictions we're told will reduce crime here. Yet, like in this Canadian case, we also see criminals find a way. South America and Africa, for example, have more violent crime than you'll find in even our worst communities.

Gun control doesn't save lives. It risks them and creates business opportunities for criminals. That's all it manages to do.

Canada is supposed to be some shining example for us, but I'm not overly impressed. It's just a matter of time before we see how ugly gun control can become.
