Terrorism is a problem that has plagued the world, and has done so since well before 9/11. That's just what kicked the hornet's nest with regard to how the United States would respond to terrorism.
Yet Europe has gotten hit a bit more often than we have, in part because it's not that difficult to access the continent from the Middle East, where most Islamic terrorists seem to come from. Some even live in European countries for years, being given literally everything while giving nothing in return, only to turn around and bite the hand that feeds them. Almost literally.
But hey, they've got strict gun control laws, so that keeps everything in check, right?
Well, we know that it doesn't, but even if it did, attacks like this are easy to plan.
Ten people have been injured in what investigators believe was a deliberate attack by a driver who rammed into pedestrians and cyclists on the holiday island of Oléron, off the west coast of France, prosecutors said.
The suspect was tasered and arrested after appearing to deliberately ram his car into pedestrians in Saint-Pierre and Dolus. As he was detained, he shouted “Allahu Akbar”, according to the prosecutors’ office in the nearby city of La Rochelle, but a terrorist motive has not been confirmed.
“It appeared to be a deliberate act,” the prosecutors’ office said.
President Macron was “closely following the situation” while flying to Brazil for the Cop30 environmental summit, government sources said.
Four of the injured were in a critical condition and two were in intensive care, Laurent Nuñez, the interior minister, said in a post on X. The victims are aged between 22 and 69, according to the mayor of Dolus.
Thankfully, though, no one has died as of yet, which is the good news.
Before anyone starts pretending this is just how it goes with terrorist attacks that don't involve guns, let's not forget the 2016 Nice truck attack, which killed 86 people. No, I will not count the perpetrator as being killed in the attack because that bastard deserved it.
Anyway, the fact that 10 people were only injured sounds more like a case of "there but for the grace of God" than anything else.
These kinds of attacks should terrify people because vehicles are far easier to get than firearms, even here in the United States. We saw a truck-based terrorist here in New Orleans on New Year's Day that left 14 people killed. All anyone needs is a vehicle and a crowd, both of which are in ready supply everywhere in the Western world.
Yet because of French gun control laws, there was no chance for anyone to respond in a way that might have prevented people from being hurt. There was no way to end it earlier.
"But if guns were more readily available, he might have used a gun."
We've seen at least two major terrorist attacks in France where the terrorists used guns. The staff at Charlie Hebdo should know better, and the 2015 Paris attacks left 130 innocent people dead despite the prohibition on both explosives and firearms.
Even if you could stop that, this is proof that evil will do as evil will do. There's no way to prevent it through laws. It can only be prevented through good, decent people fighting back before the body count rises.
