Chicago Mayor Blames Everyone Else For Her Violent Crime Problem

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has a bit of a history. Then again, all of the recent Chicago mayors share that history. In particular, they all have a history of blaming everyone else for their problems with violent crime.

You see, the state of Illinois has a lot of gun control on the books. It’s not easy to buy a gun there, at least not when compared to the rest of the nation. You have to approach the state, hat in hand, and get a FOID just to buy a gun. While they don’t deny these except for prohibited people, they don’t trip over themselves to issue them either. It also drives the cost up, making it harder to poor people in the state to protect themselves.

But criminals have no trouble getting guns. No trouble at all.

For Lightfoot, she’s ready to blame others for her problems.

Lightfoot pointed toward the presence of illegal guns in the city as one of the reasons behind the increase in violent crime.

“We are being inundated with guns from states that have virtually no gun control, no background checks, no ban on assault weapons,” she said. “That is hurting cities like Chicago. That is the thing that, if the president really wanted to help, that and the other things I identified in my letter, he could do today, tomorrow.

Except, that is a lie.

First, there are no states in the country with “virtually no gun control, no background checks” or anything of the type. Sure, some states have less gun control than Illinois, including perennial Lightfoot target Indiana, but no gun control? Not even close to true. After all, they’re all subject to federal gun control measures if nothing else.

It’s those same federal laws that dictate that any firearm sold in a gun store must undergo a background check. Further, any firearms shipped across state lines has to go through that same process. Contrary to what many on the left claim, this is how most law-abiding gun owners obtain the majority of their guns, even in states without universal background checks.

So it’s literally impossible for a state to have “no background checks.” Even if she meant for that “virtually” to apply to background checks as well, she’s still lying.

What she means is that people don’t have to go through multiple background checks just to purchase a single firearm, which is ridiculous.

Further, Lightfoot goes on to talk about assault weapons. Yet, historically, so-called assault weapons account for only a tiny fraction of the weapons used in crimes. They’re larger weapons that don’t conceal well, making them unsuited for many criminal activities. In other words, it’s highly unlikely that so-called assault weapons represent any kind of an issue in Chicago.

The truth of the matter is that Lightfoot’s problem is with guns obtained illegally in the first place. The weapons from other states that end up in Chicago do so in one of several ways. They’re either stolen, the result of a straw buy, or obtained with the intention of being sold to criminals. None of those are currently legal and additional gun control won’t stop any of them. All but a small handful of those weapons were originally purchased by people who underwent NICS checks and passed. They’d pass a FOID background check too.

Not that Lightfoot cares.

You see, she’s trying to blame others so she doesn’t have to try and justify any of her actions that might have contributed to the influx of violence in her city. If she points away from the city, she’s less likely to have to answer for her own failures. It’s also why she’s trying to guilt-trip President Trump into supporting gun control. That isn’t likely to work–the president isn’t well known for responding to shaming tactics–but she’s going to try.

As a result, Chicago won’t get any better. If there’s any improvement, it’ll be because those most likely to engage in violence are already dead and that’s about it.

All because Lightfoot won’t try to address the heart of the problem and instead wants to blame the universe for her own problems.
